Summary

Focuses on the documentation, illustration, and digital modelling of engineering designs and processes. Assesses engineering requirements and translates them into technical blueprints, drawings, layouts, and simulation models using CAD/CAM/CAE software or applying standard CAD/CAM/CAE techniques to digitize, edit, and revise engineering drawings of systems, structures and components. Customizes CAD/CAM/CAE software to create complex technical designs.

Creates Civil/Structural, Electrical, Lighting and Mechanical design packages for generation and transmission asset modifications and upgrades. Coordinates working plans and detailed drawings of systems, structures, and components. Develops drawings, models and simulations of engineering designs using computer aided design software (CAD). These designs may be created as 2D images, 3D images, or solid modeling.

Responsibilities
  • Under the guidance of a Senior Designer, the designer (Electrical, Mechanical or Civil/Structural) prepares preliminary sketches and/or schematic diagrams/wiring diagrams/block diagrams, cable & conduit schedules/flow diagrams/equipment layouts/foundation details/plan and profiles/structural details/P&IDs/bill of materials, etc. specific to their design discipline
  • Responsible for drawings of components, systems and structures which are done in collaboration with other designers and CADD Operators to develop final design and construction packages
  • Field verification through site inspections may be required to confirm existing design information reflects actual field conditions,
  • Requires skills in a design discipline and knowledge of construction techniques
  • Utilize the Document Management System to perform the design work
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in a design discipline to prepare and review design drawings
  • Familiarity with generally accepted design & drafting practices.
  • Use of Computer Aided Design & Drafting software is preferred.
  • Ability to clearly communicate design details
  • Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to analyze technical data of low to medium complexity.
  • Experience with 3D CADD products is preferred
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Associate's degree and at least 2 years of experience in preparing engineering drawings in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural disciplines

or

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical field
Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 10% - 15% travel primarily within NY State. As required, on occasion there may be travel out of NY State for inspections of equipment or for training purposes.
  • Potential for exposure to cold, heat, noise, dust, chemicals, solvents and/or any other substances typically found at a Generation or Transmission facility. Exposure is minimized through proper planning and support from site personnel.
  • Lift 50lbs to install papers in the plotters

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $78,000 - $107,800. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
