INSTRUCTIONAL COACH - FIRST NATIONS STUDIES COLLEGE ACCESS (9-12) UPDATED

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks an exceptional Instructional Coach - First Nations Studies College Access (9-12) candidate who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

The First Nations Studies (FNS) College Access Teacher is a non-evaluative, non-supervisory teacher position that will provide and coordinate college and career development services to Native American students. This position will work closely with the First Nations Studies Specialist and departmental team members to support strong academic outcomes for Native American students. The FNS College Access Teacher ensures the First Nations Studies secondary school students have means, opportunity, and preparation to access post-secondary education, ranging from two- or four-year colleges, apprenticeships, certification programs, military, etc., to be successful in the workplace. The FNS College Access Teacher works and collaborates within First Nations Studies providing students the culturally relevant curriculum designed for First Nations students. This position is assigned at the district level.

Experience Requirements:

• A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a fully licensed teacher at the secondary level
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with students on college and career readiness in a school, community program, pre-college program, counseling setting, or other college and career setting
• Experience with writing and implementing lessons and units of instruction pertinent to FNS
• Experience with college readiness standards

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of First Nations Studies with an emphasis on the eleven Woodland Tribes of Wisconsin
• Knowledge of Woodland Tribe teachings and medicines
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and preferably a Native Language as well
• Experience with the use of technology applications and tools, including-but not limited to-Microsoft Suite, Google, Infinite Campus, and Data Warehouse
• Ability to monitor data and generate reports
• Possess strong leadership, collaborative, and problem-solving skills
• Strong organizational and analytical skills
• Build trust to facilitate change, plan strategically, and fulfill the department mission
• Exhibit ability to prioritize multiple tasks, balance responsibilities, and maintain a mission-oriented focus across settings
• Consistently project a positive, team-oriented disposition

• Assists Native American students and families in completing postsecondary enrollment steps including college applications, college essays, the FAFSA, scholarships applications, and other.
• Creates a culture of college and career readiness within program participants by providing opportunities for students to examine various post-secondary options through organized field trips and events
• Utilizes resources that currently exist in First Nations Studies.
• Collaborates and maintains relationships with school staff; including but not limited to teachers, support staff, College and Career Advisors, and administrative team members to support the college and career readiness culture within the school and fortify program development and student needs
• Produces, analyzes, and summarizes data.
• Collects and maintains data, compiles statistics.
• Keeps records and prepares required reports relative to the FNS program operation and support of Native American students.
• Organizes and maintains effective communication between FNS program staff and school staff.
• Promotes career awareness, exploration, and planning.
• Supports Native American students with accessing post-secondary institutions.
• Supports Native American students with securing financial support through scholarships and financial aid.
• Provides direct support to students in the school setting.
• Conducts outreach events in the community.
• Promotes the integration of career research and work-based learning opportunities into academic courses.
• Promotes the use of technology for career planning and research.
• Recruits eligible Native American high school students to join the First Nations Studies College Access Program.
• Regularly communicates with Native American students and families.
• Organizes field trips to universities, Tribal colleges, technical schools, and cultural experiences.
• Delivers culturally appropriate lessons from the Expanding the Circle Curriculum.
• Facilitates the creation of a student portfolio for each participant.
• Provides academic and social-emotional support to students.
• Maintains accurate work, school, and student schedules; efficiently completes paperwork.
• Participates in FNS staff development programs, staff meetings, and program events.
• Attends required staff and district meetings.
• Participates in district-wide events such as family engagement of FNS students
• Performs and completes other duties as assigned.

The salary range for this position starts at $60,987.04 and increases according to a set salary schedule which is based on years' of work experience as a fully licensed teacher/pupil services educator in a K-12 setting and education beyond a bachelor's degree.

Salary range: $60,987.04 - 114,217.31 (1D - 200-day calendar)
