Location: Washington DC 20001

Duration: 12 Months

Shift: 7am-3:30pm or 7:30am-4:00pm

Job Description:

  • The incumbent is responsible for accurately reading water meters and disconnecting service for non-payment. More specifically:
  • Obtains both routine and special meter readings for assigned locations. Leave door hangers, where applicable.
  • Perform work using daily assignments and have a working knowledge of city's geography to efficiently obtain meter reading data.
  • Verify property addresses, meter locations, meter type, meter size, serial numbers of meters and any related AMR transmitting equipment. If information is different, notes account to alert office personnel of required changes or enters changes in hand held computer or work order.
  • Performs service termination on meters up to two inches in size.
  • Obtains reads from vault meters that are non-amr following confined space entry procedure.
  • Observes field conditions to detect any damage, evidence of tampering, non-registration, leakage, etc. Replaces meter lids, where applicable; larger meters may require a hooking device to help lift and replace the lid by lowering it in place.
  • Shovels dirt and/or vegetation from meter pits to clear for future access or transmission. If the repairs cannot be done with their own tools and equipment, make appropriate notations for further investigation and follow-up.
  • Serves members of the public with courtesy and professionalism.
  • Operates Authority vehicles as an essential function of the position. Maintains vehicles and/or equipment in a clean and orderly manner. Reports any operating deficiencies to the appropriate Authority personnel.
  • Performs other related duties and projects in support of Meter & Field Services.
  • Key Working Relationships: Interacts with employees throughout the department and with the public.


Required Education / Experience

  • The minimum qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability necessary for an individual to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable amounts of training are provided.
  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and minimum of 12 months of progressive experience that demonstrates the ability to record accurate meter readings and field activities.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator License.
  • Working knowledge of current meter reading policies, procedures, and codes.
  • Working knowledge in detecting signs of damage, tampering, non-registering, leakage, etc., and creating notes for further investigation and condition that cannot be corrected at that time.
  • Basic data entry and in using handheld computers with a working knowledge in using curb stop keys, wheelbarrow keys, and lazy man keys.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics. Ability to read maps and navigate accordingly.
