Position Summary |
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Communications department is seeking a full-time Media Relations Coordinator to play a key role in supporting the Senior Director of Communications and the media relations team in implementing strategic media relations plans and supporting the team in their work related to exhibition launches, scientific announcements, institutional events, video and photo shoots and public programs, among other areas. This position further supports the team in promoting and publicizing Museum stories and creating general awareness of Museum announcements and activities in news media and for the general public.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Support the media relations team, including by securing event/program listings and assisting with placing stories about them, along with other Museum announcements and activities, on a consistent basis.
- Demonstrate an active presence in the media landscape as a "go-to" person at the Museum for listings and assistant with story inquiries. Report back new opportunities and results to the Media Relations team on a proactive, frequent basis. Answer the Communications phone line and emails under the guidance of the broader team. Write clear, compelling listings alerts and pitch letters.
- Support approved photo and video shoot requests in compliance with Museum policies and using appropriate resources.
- Maintain the media database (Cision) and monitoring/archiving of story placements (print/online/broadcast) for reporting purposes. Generate custom, targeted media lists on demand. Demonstrate media relations proficiency with ongoing knowledge of changes in the landscape. Assist with the development and creation of the AMNH News Summary and Trustee Report by submitting placements.
- Maintain a general understanding of the Museum's ongoing communications/marketing planning, including the annual calendar, and proactively provide updates to the media relations team. Support for Museum events, including press previews, scientific events, educational events and public programs.
The expected salary range for the Media Relations Coordinator is $50,000/annual - $55,000/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. |
Minimum Qualifications |
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent writing, editing and research skills.
- Interest in developing a broad media relations skillset as part of a highly collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in communications, liberal arts, English, history, science or another related field.
- One year relevant experience in a public relations/communications setting.
- Experience with media database management/listing placement, story monitoring and working with integrated online and social media campaigns.
- Experience working with listings editors and the media.
- Demonstrated experience successfully placing listings across print, broadcast and online media outlets.
