Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Teaching Specialist IV to join the Burdo Laboratory at the Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science ( RITMS), a dynamic center within Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences ( RBHS) focused on advancing translational research and therapeutics.
In this role, the Research Teaching Specialist IV will contribute to groundbreaking research on HIV infection in the central and peripheral nervous systems and the heart, using both human and animal models. Working in our state-of-the-art facilities, the Research Teaching Specialist IV will also perform advanced immunologic, molecular, and virologic experiments with a focus on monocyte/macrophage-mediated disease processes.

The role offers the opportunity to be part of an impactful research team, contributing to both peer-reviewed publications and grant submissions. This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator and works closely with senior laboratory staff and trainees.

Among the key responsibilities of this position are the following:

  • Cell Culture: Media preparation, isolation and purification of cells from human and animal tissues and blood, transfections, and quality control.
  • Immunological Techniques: ELISAs, flow cytometry/FACS, immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, fluorescent/confocal/EM staining, RNAScope, and DNAScope.
  • Molecular Biology: RNA/DNA extraction, PCR/qPCR, immunoprecipitation, and western blotting. 4. Data Analysis: Generate and analyze experimental data for publications and grants.
  • Biospecimen Management: Maintain a repository of clinical samples (e.g., plasma, serum, CSF, cells), and manage shipping/receiving of biological materials.
  • Lab Equipment Maintenance: Operate, troubleshoot, and coordinate repairs for moderately complex laboratory equipment; schedule recertifications and preventive maintenance.
  • General Laboratory Responsibilities include administrative duties, keeping accurate records and notes, working knowledge of MS office to keep inventories of experimental reagents, data analysis, and other general lab duties.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in a relevant science, or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience. All applicants should have a degree in one of the following fields: biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, immunology, molecular biology, virology, or another related field.
  • Technical background should include basic and advanced laboratory techniques in molecular biology, cell culture, immunoassays, and sample processing.
  • Expertise in performing basic scientific assays including RNA/DNA extraction, and protein preparation, qPCR & ddPCR, western blot analysis, and ELISAs are essential.
  • Additional training will be provided as needed.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team is required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with HIV, virology, or immunology is preferred.


Equipment Utilized

  • Tissue culture hoods and incubators, centrifuges, electrophoresis apparatus for proteins and nucleic acids, electroporator, flow cytometry, thermal cyclers, light, confocal, and fluorescent microscopes, histopathology processor, embedding center, microtome and cryostat, ELISA plate washer, ELISA plate reader, ddPCR, qPCR, and other equipment as needed.


Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands:

  • Occasional lifting 25-50 lbs., intermittently sitting/standing/stooping, typically sitting at a desk or table.
  • Must be able to work at a computer for an extended period and must be able to operate specialized laboratory/scientific equipment.


Work Environment:

  • Biosafety Level 2 and 2+ laboratory environment working with human and animal fluids and tissue. Requires laboratory safety training.
  • Caustic and toxic chemicals.
  • Handle controlled substances such as pharmaceutical, radiological, or hazardous materials.
