Job Description Summary

Under indirect supervision, responsible for maintenance and safety of the studio facilities in the Art Department (sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, drawing, and, when requested, film/video). Primary responsibilities will include organization and maintenance of art studios, purchasing, maintenance and repair of tools, as well as oversight of safety issues in the studio and department. The technician will support studio art classes in the sculpture area through demonstrations, assistance with fabrication, maintenance, and general cleanliness of the studio. Works with faculty to organize student exhibitions and help with the presentation and photography of student art when needed. Supports student exhibition opportunities and spaces for student art displays. Assists students in pursuing, proposing, and installing exhibitions. Provides assistance in making work ready for display (fabricating frames, pedestals, other "furniture" for exhibitions) with the goal of exposing students to the essentials of displaying works. Supports the digital and equipment needs of students and faculty through the Visual Resources Center in coordination with the Visual Resources Manager. The technician will work with faculty to provide technical support in the classroom and help with the presentation of digital art projects when needed.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Assists faculty in maintaining effective operation of the art studios in Scales.
  • Assists studio faculty with health and safety issues in the studios (OSHA).
  • Orients students to Health and Safety in the student studio spaces at Wake Downtown and maintains safe and appropriate handling of various solvents and art-related chemicals in those areas.
  • Maintains shared tools and equipment in the studios.
  • Maintains safe and appropriate handling of various solvents and art-related chemicals.
  • Assists the studio faculty with ordering supplies.
  • Supervises and trains work-study students in basic maintenance of the sculpture studio.
  • Fabricates studio aids designed by faculty for specific studio areas.
  • Assists students in fabrication activities when asked by the instructor.
  • Assists students in presentation of artwork when asked by the instructor.
  • Assists students and faculty with photographing artwork when needed.
  • Assists faculty in organizing student exhibitions when needed.
  • Facilitates faculty and student use of digital applications that are central to the conduct of studio art curricula, including but not limited to 3-D modeling and 3-D printing; laser cutting, documentation of work, digital photographic editing, compositing, and output; and other digital design computer programs and equipment.
  • Tracks industry developments and recommends the purchase of new and/or updated technologies
  • Assists in planning and coordinating department teaching with digital integration
  • Coordinates audio/visual needs for teaching and events with the Instruction Technology Group and troubleshoots issues as needed
  • Oversight of departmental renovations and repairs by service professionals

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may change each semester according to course schedule, including evening hours.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Four years of college plus three years related experience in a physical shop environment, using analog and digital tools, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Functional knowledge of art-making practices across all media.
  • Good general knowledge of tools, including table saw, band saw, hand tools, and simple welding equipment.
  • Highly proficient in Mac and PC
  • Expert Adobe user with extensive image/video editing experience using Adobe Suite
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suites
  • Proficiency with 3-D modeling, 3-D printing, and laser cutting
  • Knowledge of contemporary methods of creative practices
  • Strong ability to organize workflow, prioritize work assignments, and proactive time management
  • Ability to update skills on a continual basis
  • Basic carpentry skills with good general knowledge of materials including wood, metal, and paints.
  • Mechanical ability: ability to diagnose problems with machines and tools and make simple
  • repairs.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures in and around work areas and equipment.
  • Ability to organize physical materials and spaces.
  • Ability to fabricate simple forms like shelves, stretcher bars for canvas.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written for working with faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to work with artworks carefully and patiently when required.
  • Follows established procedures to address routine problems (e.g., collections of used solvents).
  • Devises procedures to address routine problems (e.g., blockage of exit paths).
  • Investigates and solves unique problems (e.g., fabricate a tool guard for a router table).

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Four years of college with BFA or BA in fine art, or similar fine arts background (in addition to the skills and abilities listed above).

Accountabilities:

  • Works under indirect supervision.
  • Authorized to make purchases approved by faculty.
  • Works with Safety and Environmental Affairs to ensure the correct OSHA procedures are followed in the studios.
  • Responsible for the sculpture shop.

Physical Requirements:

  • Heavy work with the ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Required to have visual acuity to perform activity such as operating machines.
  • Standing and working at a table for extended periods of time.
  • Sitting and working for extended periods of time.
  • Constantly operating machinery, including table saw, band saw, hand tools, and simple welding equipment associated with Art studio facilities.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Subject to inside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to hazards including exposure to chemicals including oils.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gasses or poor ventilation.
