DEPARTMENT: Community Health

POSITION SUMMARY: The goal of the Adolescent Behavioral Health Crisis Counselor is to provide behavioral health assessment, care management and interventions for adolescent patients presenting in behavioral health crisis in the CSV emergency department and/or CSV clinical departments.

Provides behavioral health assessment, crisis interventions, and case management for adolescent patients experiencing a behavioral health crisis. Works collaboratively with medical providers, psychiatric providers, and other care team members, to ensure the patient is referred to the appropriate level of care. Provides clinical case management to transition the patient to the appropriate community service/outpatient provider(s) or appropriate inpatient facility May participate in supervision of provisionally licensed counselors or social workers, appropriate and needed.



Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Master's Level Counselor or Social Worker

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: LMHC, LPCC, LMSW, LCSW (LMHC, LMSW to attain independent New Mexico Licensure within 2 years of hire). Current Basic Life Support issued through American Heart Association required within 6 months of start date. Completion of prevention and management of aggressive behavior course within 2 months.

SKILLS:



  • Understanding of behavioral health, including substance use disorder and barriers to care


  • Understanding of crisis intervention theory, case management, and referral process; knowledge of psychopathology and ICD-10 diagnoses
  • Ability to assess clients in an emergency situation
  • Strong clinical and interpersonal skills


  • Ability to coordinate between multiple departments, as well as other facilities and community agencies, as well as, third party insurers to reach collaborative goals
  • Clinical case management skills with high acuity populations
  • Ability to multi-task in a stressful environment


  • Ability to work independently on own accord and initiative, yet also as a team member
  • Flexibility with job assignments
  • Ability to read, write and communicate verbally in English.


EXPERIENCE: Experience working with behavioral health and/or substance abuse issues preferred. Prior experience working with adolescents preferred. Prior experience working within a hospital/clinic environment preferred.

Multiple settings and variable unpredictable situations in the ED/inpatient, primary care, and community settings. May work in a traditional clinic office setting, clinic setting, and/or ED/inpatient setting. Exposure to infectious diseases. Subject to varying unpredictable situations. Multiple simultaneous activities around patient care. Exposure to infectious diseases and intermittent exposure possible to blood, excrements, odors and noise.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Emotional and physical ability to cope with stress and physical nature of inpatient work with behavioral health patients; the possibility of emergency lifting and need for physical interventions. Must be able to handle emergency/crisis situations and prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Has knowledge of and uses good body mechanics. Ability to work in crisis and potentially hazardous situation(s). Exposure to infectious diseases and intermittent exposure is possible to blood, excrement, odors, and noise. Hearing and visual acuity within normal limits. Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination required.
