SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:

Ensure facility compliance with EH&S regulations, guidelines, procedures, and industry standards. Promote a safe working environment for all personnel. Develop and support safety and environmental management systems, programs, and policies, as well as the professional development of EHS staff. Coordinate, lead, facilitate, and maintain responsibility for Contractor Safety, Regulatory record keeping, and other programs that impact worker safety and environmental stewardship. Support Emergency Preparedness efforts, including the emergency response team and business continuity programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct chemical assessments for new materials coming on-site to support our new Small-Molecule Potent Compounds and Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs) development research. Review, update, and implement our Hazard Banding System for risk tolerance, proper PPE selection, and Engineering Controls per lab and function.
  • Provide technical expertise and support in occupational safety to promote individual behavior-based safety programs and ensure workers maintain vigilance regarding all safety concerns.
  • Develop, review, and revise EH&S guidelines and procedures to ensure that they are established, current, accurate, compliant, and effectively communicated.
  • Support the development of safety standards and guidelines for engineering projects. Review capital projects for compliance with all safety and environmental requirements.
  • Oversee the training of employees and monitor their compliance with chemical hygiene plans and procedures.
  • Provide training on company and regulatory technical safety and environmental requirements.
  • Manage site safety, such as Electrical safety (e.g., lockout/tag out), contractor safety, and confined spaces. Also, manage environmental programs like water, energy use, waste management minimization, and change management. Prepare safety reports for corporate and external regulatory agencies, such as California OSHA.
  • Participate in safety and environmental compliance initiatives to ensure that the company is always poised and prepared for regulatory audits and inspections. May interface with regulatory authorities during audits and inspections.
  • Ensure Inspection, maintenance, and coordination of all activities related to site-wide safety equipment, including safety audits.
  • Support Emergency Response Team as the subject matter expert and/or incident commander for addressing environmental incident response and remediation efforts.
  • Conduct Risk Assessments (PHA, Haz Ops, What If's) and Job Hazard Analysis for existing and new processes.
  • Support investigations for all incidents and accidents on site and ensure timely completion of corrective actions. Oversee and update the incident reporting and investigation system based on effective cause/effect analysis, involving and empowering front-line employees to change the culture from reactive to preventive and ultimately predictive.
  • Participate in cross-functional safety committees and safety-focused project meetings.
  • Management of multiple EH&S-related consultants and service vendors.
  • Participate in the company Emergency Response Team.
  • Cooperate in capturing day-to-day modifications of chemical inventory and work regularly with lab owners to ensure compliance with the chemical management plan.
  • Lead or supervise the work of others by providing direction to subordinates or teams using established policies and precedents.
  • Plan and assign work in accordance with company and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Oversee special projects.
  • Recommend and assign appropriate developmental training to staff.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises staff, including hiring, scheduling, and assigning work, reviewing performance, and recommending salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, or terminations.
  • Manages others through subordinate supervisors.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Education:

  • BS/BA degree in related discipline and 13 years of related experience; or
  • MA/MS degree in related discipline and 11 years of related experience; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • Experience with principles of Biosafety
  • Experience with Potent Compound management or Industrial Hygiene concepts

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to safety, hazardous materials, emergency response, and risk.
  • Knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS) as outlined in the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Skilled at conducting incident or injury investigations and managing OSHA 300 logs.
  • Extensive knowledge of Potent Compound management or Industrial Hygiene concepts
  • Applies strong analytical and business communication skills.
  • Flexibility in response to change.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Environment: primarily working indoors and outdoors of buildings throughout the entire campus, including office, lab, and hazardous waste storage areas.
  • May require weekend work, esp. related to emergency procedures.
  • Travel may be required - probably no more than 5% per year.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across severalU.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this positionis $172,000 - $245,000 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate's geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors. In addition to the base salary, as part of our Total Rewards program, Exelixis offers comprehensive employee benefits package, including a 401k plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts. Employees are also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, or if field sales staff, a sales-based incentive plan.
