We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable Aerospace Urethane Research Chemist to join our research and development team. In this role you will be responsible for formulating, synthesizing, and analyzing urethane-based materials, and related polymers. This role involves developing new products, improving existing formulations, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. We are looking for a hands-on candidate with an ability to conduct independent research in a multi-disciplinary and fast-paced environment.

This is an on-site role at our Sylmar, CA facility and will report to the F-35 Global Technology Manager.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the conceptualization, design, and execution of complex research projects focused on polyurethane materials for diverse applications including coatings, adhesives, foams, elastomers, and sealants.
• Develop and optimize urethane formulations for various applications such as plastic films, substrates, and coatings, with potential cross-over to adhesives, foams, elastomers, and sealants chemistry.
• Demonstrate knowledge of urethane polymers, including prepolymers, polyols, isocyanates, and additives as well related characterization techniques.
• Design and implement experimental plans to optimize formulations for performance, durability, and manufacturability, ensuring alignment with commercial objectives.
• Perform comprehensive analytical testing and evaluation of urethane materials, including:
  • Rheometry, Thermal and Mechanical testing (e.g., DMA, TMA, TGA, DSC, tensile testing, elongation, hardness, impact resistance, other ASTM tests)
  • Chromatographic techniques (e.g., GC, GC-MASS, GCP, HPLC)
  • Spectroscopic methods (e.g., FTIR, NMR, UV-Vis)
• Troubleshoot formulation and processing issues to improve product performance and manufacturability.
• Stay current with advances in urethane chemistry and related technologies to drive innovation.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports, scientific publications, and patent applications, present research findings at internal meetings and external conferences.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field with a focus on urethane or polymer chemistry required.

OR

• Masters in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field with a focus on urethane or polymer chemistry with at least two (2) years of industry experience required.
• Experience in urethane formulation, synthesis, and polymer characterization preferred.
• Experience in advanced analytical techniques including thermal and mechanical testing, chromatography, spectroscopy, and microscopy required.
• Project management experience preferred.

The base salary range for this position is $90,000 to $107,000 based on experience.
