Job Summary

UCSF Health is looking for an Director, Internal and Executive Communications to help shape how the organization informs, engages, and aligns its 20,000-person workforce. You'll join a team of sharp, mission-driven communicators who are trusted partners to leaders across the health system. We bring clarity to big priorities, elevate the stories that matter, and give employees the information they need to understand where the organization is headed. It's fast-moving, collaborative work with real impact on how people show up every day.

In this individual contributor role, you'll support leaders across system functions and major business units-helping them translate complex initiatives into clear, timely, and meaningful communication for employees. You'll also contribute to the coordinated internal communications program for UCSF Health, partnering closely with colleagues to maintain consistency, share insights, and support both day-to-day operations and systemwide priorities.

This is a hands-on role for an experienced communicator who is comfortable operating independently, collaborating across functions, and supporting leaders. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, balances enterprise perspective with focused leadership support, and brings sound judgment to a wide range of topics and situations. This position requires the ability to be onsite in San Francisco at least one day a week.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The annual salary range for this position is $110,400-$235,400, with a min. target entry point of $146,600+ depending on experience. Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area or four years of equivalent experience/training.
  • Seven years or more of related experience in a leadership capacity (lead, supervisor or manager).
  • Deep understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, content development, and the effective use of various media formats. Proven ability to tailor messaging and channels for different audiences, ensuring clarity, engagement, and impact.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, including selecting, training, evaluating, and motivating staff to deliver high-quality communications. Experience providing clear direction, coaching, and corrective action when needed.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive long- and short-term strategic communication plans aligned with organizational goals. Experience advising senior leaders on communication strategies.
  • Awareness of industry trends, regulatory considerations, and specialized subject matter relevant to academic medical centers to include knowledge of healthcare, higher education, and public affairs issues.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages, navigate complex organizational dynamics, and engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to assess organizational and external landscapes, anticipate challenges, and develop communication approaches that support change management, employee engagement, and leadership alignment.
  • Strong critical thinking, project management, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify challenges, develop solutions, and drive communications initiatives that support organizational priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines and within budget constraints while managing competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-profile environment.
  • Extensive experience in executive and internal communication.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with experience developing strategic messaging for senior leaders.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement communication plans that drive engagement and alignment across diverse audiences.
  • Expertise in managing high-profile internal events, such as town halls and leadership meetings.
  • Exceptional project management skills and the ability to execute communication strategies in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, which are foundational values central to UCSF's mission.
  • The ability to work onsite in our San Francisco office for a min. of three days a week or more.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Deep understanding of UCSF Health's mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of communication technologies, digital platforms, and design principles to effectively manage professional staff and oversee content creation across multiple mediums, including written, visual, and electronic formats.
  • Exp. working in a large health system or complex organization.
