Overview

The selected candidate will perform assignments of basic to high complexity in engineering design, problem analysis, planning, will conduct field investigations and prepare associated reports, specifications, standards and test memoranda within the field or fields of responsibility.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Use technical competence to determine and develop the civil scope-of-work for a project including establishing the design basis.
  • Prepare advanced planning documents, scoping documents, budget requests and appropriation documents.
  • Prepare, review, and finalize detailed calculations, design documents, drawings, and specifications for projects.
  • Provide technical oversight and design verification reviews to engineering design by third party consultants including meeting with vendors and customers to optimize the proposed design.
  • Review designs internally as required for constructibility and from a future operations and maintenance standpoint.
  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates and schedules.
  • Prepare or assist in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports or proposals.
  • Perform economic evaluations.
  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates and schedules.
  • Review/update/develop company-specific civil engineering standard specifications.
  • Provide technical solutions to operational/maintenance issues related to civil structures.
  • Ability to use engineering design software and understand/interpret analysis output.
  • Provide support to existing and proposed Company Substation and other related facilities.
  • Supervise both in-house and out-of-house design efforts.
  • Provide direction, advice, documentation, and approved field changes to construction staff.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis.
  • Provides technical assistance as required throughout the entire project lifecycle.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
  • Develop and process request for proposals (RFP) for outside services including pre and post bid field walks.
  • Monitor coordinate deliverable package schedule milestones with outside vendor.
  • Review, guide, direct and monitor the progress of awarded outside contracts.
  • Track and process milestone payments.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and 3 years of applicable engineering experience in the design of all types of steel, concrete and masonry structures and a thorough knowledge of all applicable codes such as AISC, ACI, ASCE, NYC Building Code, etc. EIT registration. or
  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with a Bachelor's degree in any engineering discipline and 3 years of applicable engineering experience in the design of all types of steel, concrete and masonry structures and a thorough knowledge of all applicable codes such as AISC, ACI, ASCE, NYC Building Code, etc. EIT registration.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering
Relevant Work Experience
  • Knowledge in the design of concrete, masonry and steel structures. Required
  • Working knowledge of all applicable codes such as ACI, AISC, NESC, ASCE, NYC Building Code, etc. Required
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the safety and environmental issues that impact civil projects. Required
  • Knowledge in basic engineering design and principles. Required
  • Knowledgeable in basic engineering design and principles. Required
  • Must be well organized, detail oriented, able to render sound business decisions, and have the flexibility to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines. Required
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills and have the demonstrated ability to effectively interact with various levels of personnel. Required
  • Computer proficiency to include Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Required
  • Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments. Preferred
  • Working knowledge of computer aided design programs such as STAAD, AutoCad, Mathcad. Preferred

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Well organized, detail oriented and flexible to handle multiple assignments
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred
Additional Physical Demands
  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the company service territory and to company locations and wear the required PPE as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to work indoors and outdoors and in all weather conditions
  • Must be willing and able to climb stairs and ladders as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to work in a substation environment with noise, heat, confined space, tall structures, etc.
  • Must be willing and able to wear a respirator and full body fall protection as required.
  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers and support emergency assignments.
  • Must be able to work in substation, generating station, other industrial and construction environments with noise, heat, confined spaces, etc including climbing of ladders and stairs is also required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the Company service territory.
  • Must be willing and able to wear the required PPE as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime and extended hours, as well as on weekends/holidays as needed, or as system conditions dictate.
  • Must be willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to work in substations in the vicinity of high voltage equipment, near and within buildings and yard areas.
  • Must be willing and able to work in and around live electricity.
  • Must be willing and able to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces, on roofs, around noise, high heat, and on elevations
  • Must be able to detect traffic sounds, alarms and backup warning devices when working near traffic, around moving equipment and within substations and buildings.
