Job Summary

The Assistant I - Accounting position processes expenditures, completes filing for Federal and State reimbursements, compiles financial reports, and ensures schools comply with government/grantor requirements and the established policies of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors.

Wage: $40,950 - $56,737 (12-month)

THE SELECTION PROCESS: will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Office of Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • An associates degree in accounting or finance required (or the equivalent of 4 years full-time accounting experience).
  • Previous experience in an accounting-related position, preferably working in a public sector environment and grant accounting experience.
Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative analysis and advise on budget procedures (analyzes and supports schools, maintains compliance to federal law), personnel sheets/ assignment, expenditures, grant (categorical) procedures, and problem solving.
  • Completes monthly reports, updates reports within excel when needed, creates and processes journal entries, maintains active/inactive status for accounts, distribute and email monthly reports to Grantors, Grant Administrators, and other agencies, enters monthly claim (a form used for requesting payment) reports electronically, etc.
  • Completes payroll verification and adjustments; processes personnel changes from Grant Administrators for all grant (categorical) projects, reviews journal entries to adjust salaries to match personnel assignments, reconciles positions to grant (categorical) project budgets by editing payroll listings, etc.
  • Processes cash receipts.
  • Assists Grant Administrators in the allocation of yearly budgets.
  • Ensures a high level of accuracy and organization.
  • Actively supports the MPS strategic plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
