Summary

The Chemistry Lab Coordinator provides oversight and maintenance of the Natural Science facilities, including supervision of student workers and adjunct laboratory instructors, instruction and training in laboratory techniques, instruction of some and coordination of Natural Science labs with faculty and staff. The Coordinator will also implement lab safety protocols and oversee compliance to laboratory safety policy.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises instructional staff, adjuncts and student lab assistants on the preparation and set up of instructional labs; coordinates with faculty on the preparation and set up of instructional labs and works to provide the timely supply and availability of instructional materials.
  • Will assist faculty in the development of curricular outcomes for instructional labs and oversee their implementation by instructional staff and adjuncts in addition to the instruction of some lab sections based on their specialization.
  • Maintains instructional labs and facilities and oversees their proper usage by department faculty, students and staff. Assigned rooms and facilities include the chemistry instructional and research labs, chemistry stockroom and prep areas.
  • Coordinates with division staff and faculty in the procurement of departmental/divisional supplies and equipment, management and updating of supply inventory system, vendor contacts and maintenance/repair contracts. Serves as departmental liaison with SXU facilities staff or outside vendors in directing work orders and repairs as needed.
  • Coordinates with divisional director on the disbursement of departmental funds for purchases and maintenance expenses; Prepares related correspondences and coordinates all relevant supporting documentation, including spreadsheets, vendor contracts, budget reports.
  • Coordinates with the divisional safety officer to insure adherence to laboratory safety policies and coordinates with chemistry lab coordinator to oversee chemical safety protocols by faculty, students and staff. Maintains and updates procedures and records on environmental/chemical safety protocols and undergoes periodic training in environmental safety practices and administration.
  • Carries out the hiring and supervision of student lab assistants; trains student lab assistants in laboratory safety and preparation of materials for instructional laboratories. Sets work schedules and approves timesheets for student lab assistants.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Chemical Sciences preferred; will consider degree in Natural sciences that includes requisite hours of graduate course work and/or professional experience in chemistry
  • Training and/or experience in Windows-based computer environments and Microsoft Office software, including WORD and EXCEL.
  • Experience in an education setting preferred
  • Higher education teaching experience desirable
  • Strong communication (oral and written), organizational, interpersonal and time management skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, work independently, and prioritize
  • Knowledge of Self-Service and Colleague Desirable
  • Ability to work with people in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner
  • Ability to lift or move boxes/materials
  • May be expected to work some evening hours based on scheduling of lab courses
