The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a 37.5%-time Lecturer position for the Fall Quarter to teach SPH 244Y: Introduction to Medical Statistics.

About the Course:

SPH 244Y is a required graduate-level course for students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) programs. It introduces core biostatistical methods and concepts essential to public health and preventive veterinary medicine. The Lecturer will be responsible for leading the design and delivery of this course.

This is a three-month, non-renewable appointment that carries 1.5 Instructional Workload Credits (IWC). In-person teaching will be held at both the Sacramento and Davis campuses.

Academic Instruction

• Develop a course syllabus in accordance with UC Davis standards
• Deliver lectures, labs, and discussions using appropriate instructional tools
• Select and assign course materials; design and administer assessments
• Evaluate student performance and submit final grades by the deadline

Instructional Oversight

• Supervise Teaching Assistants (TAs), Readers, or Associate Instructors as applicable
• Ensure instructional content aligns with course objectives and academic standards
• Maintain academic integrity and instructional quality

Student Engagement

• Hold regular office hours and respond to student inquiries
• Provide accommodations in coordination with the Student Disability Center

Compliance & Administration

• Adhere to FERPA and all relevant university policies
• Complete required university training and report relevant incidents
• Manage course logistics, student records, and evaluations

Course Details

SPH 244Y: Introduction to Medical Statistics (4 units)

Lecture/Discussion: 4 hours/week

Topics include data presentation, probability distributions (binomial, Poisson, normal, t, F, Chi-square), hypothesis testing, nonparametric methods, linear regression, and correlation. The course includes hands-on training in statistical software, particularly SAS.

The Department of Public Health Sciences is housed within the UC Davis School of Medicine. Our mission is to improve population health through research, education, public service, clinical care, and policy development. We integrate disciplines such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, and behavioral sciences.

• Must possess a PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or equivalent.
• Evidence of teaching excellence and expertise in public health practice.

• an MPH degree from a CEPH-accredited institution in any public health specialty (e.g., general public health, epidemiology, global health, health services, health promotion, etc.) is preferred.

• University-level teaching experience is highly desired, as is familiarity with distance education technologies.
