THE POSITION

Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) is looking for a Library Assistant with effective customer service skills to support two Cooperative programs: Interlibrary Loan and Library Mail Service. A successful candidate will be committed to providing excellent service to both library staff and patrons. The Library Assistant will work as part of the Patron Services Team and must be self-motivated to perform work independently.

In this role, you will work closely with two Senior Library Assistants in each program. Most of your day will be spent handling Interlibrary Loan requests and mailings. You'll need effective attention to detail in all aspects of the job to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Flexibility is also important, as you may occasionally be assigned new tasks or asked to assist with the Automated Materials Handling sorter or drive to a local postal hub.

About WCCLS
WCCLS is not a library. We are a Washington County department that partners with nine cities and three non-profit organizations that operate local libraries. WCCLS provides the majority of funding for all public libraries in the county. We are a Washington County department of 36 FTE that supports 16 public library locations, giving patrons access to 1.5 million items in our shared collection. WCCLS reduces costs by efficiently centralizing operations such as our shared catalog, logistics, digital library collections, IT, and more. Learn more about WCCLS at wccls.org/about.

Your Team
Patron Services is integral to the success of WCCLS and our cooperative. True to our name, we are centered on patrons, with service as our driving force. We're looking for team members who genuinely enjoy helping others and feel good about reaching goals together. Every day is an opportunity to make a difference in the community, and that focus can make your work feel truly rewarding. In this role, you'll take direction when needed and handle ongoing tasks to support our patrons. Being a good communicator, comfortable with technology, able to solve problems, and open to asking for help when needed are all important for success.

Who You Work With
You will report to the Patron Services Supervisor, whose primary goal is to support you in delivering the best possible service to the community. In collaboration with your daily team, you will assist the Materials Movement team as needed to ensure timely delivery of materials to patrons. Additionally, you may support member library staff by answering program-specific service questions as required.

Who You Serve
Patron Services serves WCCLS staff, member library staff, and the community. We provide Interlibrary Loan services to libraries, direct document delivery to patrons, and operate the Library Mail Service for those who are physically unable to visit a library.

A Typical Day
As a Library Assistant, on any given day, you may find yourself:

  • Working closely with the Senior Library Assistant in Interlibrary Loan on lending and borrowing tasks in WorldShare and the local Integrated Library System (Polaris).
  • Troubleshooting specific issues, including communicating with library staff in writing or on the phone as needed.
  • Providing document delivery to patrons via email.
  • Preparing and processing mail, printing labels, compiling documentation, physical packing and unpacking of materials and moving boxes and tubs.
  • Collaborating with the supervisor to identify and prioritize additional tasks including assisting the Library Mail Service, assisting the librarian with collection maintenance and backing up the Materials Movement team.
Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate has library experience, familiarity with Polaris ILS, and a background in Interlibrary Loan. They are responsive to patrons, team-oriented yet proactive, and communicate effectively. They are tech-savvy, adaptable, detail-oriented, and bring focus to their work. They value integrity, take accountability, and seek help when needed. As lifelong learners, they embrace growth and support the library's values of access, knowledge, clear communication, respect, empathy, and collaboration.
