Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
OASIS (Office of Arts and Sciences Information Services) provides information technology support for the College of Arts and Sciences at
UNC-Chapel Hill. The
OASIS Computing Specialists (
OCS) team delivers desktop and endpoint support across departments, helping faculty, staff, and graduate students meet academic, administrative, and research goals. The unit values technical proficiency, professionalism, and collaborative problem-solving, with an emphasis on strong customer relationships and service excellence. |
Position Summary |
The On-site Computing Specialist will provide direct, hands-on desktop support for faculty, staff, and graduate students for the Departments within the College of Arts and Sciences at
UNC-Chapel Hill. This temporary position is responsible for supporting Windows, macOS, and mobile device environments, along with Microsoft Office 365 applications. The specialist will serve as a front-line technical resource, offering exceptional customer service while diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, and network-related issues. The successful candidate will work closely with members of the Office of Arts and Sciences Information Services (
OASIS) Computing Specialists (
OCS) team and contribute to maintaining a reliable, secure, and user-friendly computing environment. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
- Associate's degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration; Networking Technology, or related areas and two years of experience in the Information Technology field related to the position's role; or a
- Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position's role, or a
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math or Engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position's role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Demonstrated experience providing technical support in a desktop computing environment. Proficiency with Windows, macOS, and mobile operating systems. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 suite, including Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and OneDrive. Familiarity with basic networking concepts and troubleshooting (e.g., IP addressing,
DNS, connectivity issues). Experience with Active Directory (e.g., user account management, group policy basics). Use of IT ticketing systems to manage support requests and document solutions. Excellent communication skills and a customer-focused approach. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, academic environment. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Prior experience supporting users in a higher education setting. Familiarity with
UNC-Chapel Hill's IT infrastructure, policies, applications and support models. Experience with software and operating system deployment and endpoint security practices. Understanding of remote support tools (e.g., Bomgar, Remote Desktop, etc.). |
