JOB FUNCTION:
The Lead Diesel Technician is a member of the management team, assisting in overseeing and performing fleet maintenance operations. The Lead Diesel Technician is responsible for coordinating and leading truck and trailer mechanics, while maintaining a safe, efficient, goal-oriented department. This position will report to the Mechanic Shop Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain and continue to develop a high level of maintenance procedures to lessen fleet problems
- Oversee and coordinate the activities of all diesel and trailer mechanics across all shifts
- Conduct thorough inspections of trucks, trailers, and assigned equipment
- Use diagnostic tools to identify mechanical and electrical problems, then repair or replace malfunctioning parts
- Ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks
- Assist the Mechanic Shop Manager in planning and scheduling maintenance activities
- Train and educate mechanics on new equipment and techniques
- Assist the Mechanic Shop Manager in maintaining inventory and ordering parts as needed
- Bring any questions or concerns of mechanics to the Mechanic Shop Manager
- Assist in adhering to safety procedures and regulations
- Fill in for the Mechanic Shop Manager when needed
- Other duties as assigned
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- A strong understanding of diesel engine operation, components, and repair techniques is essential
- A strong understanding of trailer operation, components, and repair techniques is essential; including refrigeration units
- Proficiency in using various tools and equipment for repairs, including power tools, hand tools, and specialized machinery
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and interpreting test results to identify and troubleshoot problems.
- Strong communication, organizational and leadership skills
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Basic computer skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to supervise and lead others
- Ability to multi-task
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- 10 years of experience in the industry
- Completion of a diesel mechanic diploma or associate's degree program preferred
- Some supervision experience preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Mechanics work on, under, or in vehicles for 6+ hours a day
- Computer keyboard work sitting for up to 2 hours at a time
- Occasional walking, bending, crawling, and climbing
- Often perform lifting, twisting, pushing, and pulling activities
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vehicles, oils, gases, and fumes
- Occasional exposure to extreme cold and hot temperatures
- Air-conditioned office

- Occasional moderate to loud truck shop noise
