This position is located on the Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, New York.

No Visa sponsorship available for this position.

Who we are:

Located in Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University is a bold, innovative, inclusive, and dynamic teaching and research university where staff, faculty, and students alike are challenged to make an enduring contribution to the betterment of humanity. Cornell University is one of the largest and most diverse institutions in the Ivy League. We are a community of 22,000 students and more than 10,000 faculty and staff members representing more than 80 countries and hundreds of disciplines-global cultures, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and ideas.

The Division of Public Safety (DPS) is a group of public safety units that work collaboratively with our community to keep Cornell a safe and secure campus to learn and live. It is comprised of the Public Safety 911 Communications Center, the Cornell University Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management, the Clery Compliance Office, the Access Control Program, the Community Response Team, and the Public Safety Ambassadors.

The Community Response Team is a unit housed alongside other first response resources within the Division of Public Safety. This team works in concert with emergency response resources such as Cornell Emergency Management Services, Cornell Environment Health & Safety, Cornell EMS, Cornell Public Safety Communications Center, and the Cornell University Police.

What you will do:
You will lead a team of coordinators who provide behavioral health services of a non-clinical nature and facilitate resource connection in partnership with individuals in crisis or those in need of mental health support on Cornell's Ithaca campus. The team works in concert with other emergency response and supportive resources such as Cornell EMS, Cornell EH&S, Cornell Public Safety Communications, the Office of Human Resources, and the Cornell University Police Department to respond to calls for service, conduct mental health assessments, make appropriate referrals and handoffs to appropriate wraparound university, city, and county services, and provide short term case management at the direction of the Cornell University Care and Crisis Services team. The Community Response Team plays a key role across Cornell's health and safety crisis response infrastructure of prioritizing the diversion of individuals in crisis or those in need of mental health support from punitive harm and facilitating their connection to supportive resources.

The Director leads the collaborative programmatic development, evaluation, expansion, hiring, and training of the Cornell University Community Response Team (CRT), involving policy development, training curriculum design, and other appropriate short-term and long-term goals and objectives. This position also plays a central role in guiding collaborative efforts across the university emergency response and health units to develop and operationalize policies and practices supportive of trauma-informed, person-centered relationships of care that reduce the harm of punitive systems and further the university's educational mission.

Shift work and on-call responsibilities (nights, weekends, and holidays) are expected as program needs require.

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

Who you are:
You are an experienced leader of teams with a work history that supports your ability to work collaboratively within and across organizations to build unity of effort and meet strategic and programmatic goals.

Some other required qualifications for the position include:

  • Master's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Knowledge of collaborative techniques and coordinated community response models.
  • Ability to balance strategic, big picture thinking with efficient management of day-to-day processes.
  • Effective leadership, teambuilding, collaboration, and strategic staff planning abilities.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, time management skills, and ability to deliver work on assigned schedules.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate and work effectively across varying levels in a demanding, highly sensitive environment.
  • Possess sound judgement and integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to act decisively and independently to resolve complex issues.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, in good standing.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule that includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proven experience connecting inclusion, belonging and wellbeing practices to business goals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of licenses or certifications in any of the following or similar domains: Clinical Social Work, Public Health, Psychology.
  • Three or more years of experience in social services, emergency first response, behavioral health, crisis intervention, or similar fields, preferably in a leadership position
  • Experience working in higher education and/or with college-aged population in a crisis, mental health, and/or wellness capacity.
  • Experience working with diverse publics, preferably in an educational environment.
  • Bilingual and/or Multilingual.

Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification.

Experience gained prior to licensure - paid and volunteer - will also be considered when assessing qualifications.
