Design Engineering Intern



  1. What is the scope of this person's responsibilities?


To assist the design team in their daily work and to complete special assignments. The design engineer (DE) job has responsibility for system design, stress and structural analysis, thermal analysis, flow analysis, R&D test development and execution, and design tool and new knowledge development. Must work well in a team environment. This role is a preparatory role for company future hires in Design Engineering for a competitive advantage. This position reports to the Director of Design Engineering. (Design Engineering Intern a Director of Design Engineering a VP Engineering and Programs a General Manager).



  1. What is the MISSION for this person?


This person is to help DE's accomplish projects focused on developing new products, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design group, and the company as a whole.



  1. What are the most important objectives you need this person to achieve? (AT LEAST FIVE).


To support DE's in the following areas:



  1. Data reduction and analysis
  2. Structural/thermal/flow analysis
  3. R&D testing support
  4. Technical report generation
  5. Programming/automation of design tools
  6. Creation and implementation of process standards

  2. In addition to the actions required to produce the above results, what other duties and functions will this person be responsible for?


Working with all groups within the company to complete tasks as required. Groups include, but are not limited to: Program Management, Project Engineering, Drafting, Test Lab, Operations, Quality Engineering, Purchasing, Contracts, and Shipping/Receiving.



  1. Desired background (education, years and type of experience, skills and knowledge, etc.):

    1. Working on, or recently graduated with, a BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics.
    2. Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Proficient in MATLAB or equivalent, or at least one programming language (VBA or Python preferred).
    3. A majority of coursework completed in basic physics, calculus, and strength of materials.
    4. Can demonstrate ability to face unfamiliar problems by application of first principles of engineering and physics.
    5. Can demonstrate competence, backed by examples of actual execution.
    6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    7. Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to break down complex projects into actionable and measurable tasks.

The intern position can lead to becoming a Design Engineer or can lead to other technical positions within the organization, depending on need and aptitude. At any given time, approximately 25% of the Engineering and Programs department employees were at one time interns with the company. Historically, approximately 50% of interns have been offered positions based on intern performance and job availability.



  1. What are the company expectations of an intern?

    1. Works hourly. Part-Time - Maximum 29 hours per week. Schedule is flexible to account for coursework; to be agreed upon with direct supervisor.
    2. Must work physically on site, typically in a cubicle environment.
    3. In addition to various daily duties will perform at least one primary project during the term of employment, which will be reported on and presented in a team review environment.
