The Department

The Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is nationally accredited (and one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The department is the steward of approximately 450 acres of parkland, featuring community and historic parks, senior services, playgrounds, multigenerational facilities, aquatic centers, tennis courts, and multi-use fields. Nearly 40 percent of the city is dedicated open space, and the department maintains approximately 40 linear miles of recreational trails. The department is a leading provider of world-class projects, programs, and events that strengthen and build community connectivity.

The Position

The most senior level in the Recreation Leader job family. Positions generally require specialist knowledge for large high-profile events and/ or programs. Incumbents work independently, with little supervision. Assignments are complex in nature and require the proven ability to coordinate events or programs associated with specific areas of responsibility.

This opening will provide oversight of kitchen operations as part of the Senior Nutrition Program at the Carlsbad Senior Center. This position plays a key role in ensuring safe, high-quality meal service for older adults while maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal health standards. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, food service experience, and the ability to lead a small team in a dynamic community-based setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and administers assigned program area: Senior Nutrition Program
  • Coordinates related projects to ensure that the goals and objectives of the assigned program are met by performing the duties personally or through employees supervised
  • Ensures current program compliance with all local, state and federal government regulations and supports appropriate actions to meet deadlines
  • Recommends and suggests guidelines and procedures for the assigned program
  • Responds to incidents or service issues in real time to ensure uninterrupted meal service
  • Oversees and participates in routine cleaning tasks, including dishwashing, surface sanitizing, equipment maintenance, table clearing, and trash removal to ensure a clean and safe kitchen and dining environment
  • Ensures proper use, cleaning, and organization of kitchen appliances, food storage areas, and supplies in accordance with health and safety standards

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Professional communication techniques, both oral and in writing
  • Principles of leading and/or supervising staff and providing guidance to volunteers
  • Working knowledge of HACCP principles, safe food handling, and sanitation standards
  • Strong organizational skills to manage checklists, temperature logs, inventory, and compliance documentation
  • Basic technology for logging data, reading menus, and printing reports

Ability to:

  • Meet State of California Tuberculosis test requirements
  • Manage programs and projects including monitoring resources and results
  • Communicate well with others including coworkers, supervisor, and the general public
  • Navigate assigned program area and make course corrections in current and future operations
  • Perform hands-on cleaning tasks and maintain high standards of kitchen sanitation

Experience & Education

Any combination to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License
  • Food Handler and Food Manager certification, or ability to obtain within 30 days
  • CPR and first aid certification, or ability to obtain
  • Experience in food service management, preferably in a congregate or institutional setting
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers
  • Experience working with older adults preferred

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • May be exposed to various weather conditions and occasional loud or unexpected noises in the kitchen or surrounding facility.

*Part-time employee cannot exceed 1,000 total hours worked within one fiscal year*
