Job Summary

Involves patient care services for a range of mental health disorders, often severe including major depressive disorders, paranoia, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. Settings may be inpatient, outpatient or clinical research studies. Patient care may be provided by a combination of licensed clinicians, as well as counselors and crisis intervention specialists. Patients typically require routine assistance, treatment or a specialized and controlled environment. Primary emphasis on treatment and attempt where possible to help patients control their own lives in the outside world, with the use of a combination of psychiatric drugs and psychotherapy. Promotes shared decision-making at all levels to ensure a shared voice in practices, exchange of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved patient services. Management levels may also be responsible for clinic operations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $118,300 - $268,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Alliance Health Project (AHP) provides a wide range of mental health services to persons living with HIV/AIDS, as well as members of the LGBTQ community living with serious mental health challenges. AHP also provides publications and trainings for health care professionals and volunteers. Since AHP's founding in 1984, AHP has served thousands of clients, counselors and clinicians, justifying its reputation as one of the leading HIV and LGBTQ mental health agencies in San Francisco -- a reputation achieved by anticipating and addressing the challenges of the communities AHP serves.

Required Qualifications


  • Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychology or Social Work, or related Clinical Field, plus a minimum of 3 years clinical and counseling experience. 6 years of related experience including 5 in a lead/supervisory role
  • Experience in the treatment of multiply diagnosed patients (HIV, mental conditions and substance abuse).
  • Advanced knowledge and applied background in clinical intervention strategies and treatment planning for patients with severe mental health conditions. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge in an acute care setting.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations. Ability to apply policy knowledge to suggest improvements to potential regulatory issues.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage, lead and motivate employees. Strong conflict resolution skills to resolve issues and counsel staff. Five plus years lead/supervisory experience
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate. Demonstrated active listening and counseling skills.
  • Knowledge of business software, specialized applications and electronic medical records systems used in behavioral health clinics / clinical departments.
  • Proven expertise in assessing and managing the psychosocial needs of persons with HIV/AIDS.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic concerns
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team as well as independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in reliability and attendance
  • A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance

Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with the neurocognitive aspects of HIV disease.
  • Prior UCSF or UC experience
  • Fluent in Spanish, with written and verbal proficiency and past professional experience utilizing Spanish in clinical work.
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Trauma-Focused Therapies (STAIR, Cognitive Processing Therapy)

License/Certification


  • Licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as LCSW, MFT or LPCC, or appropriate regulatory body
