Overview
This is a hybrid role, with the expectation that time working will regularly take place inside and outside of a company office. First Citizens Sponsor Finance provides cash flow and asset based senior debt for private equity-backed transactions in the middle market throughout the United States. The Associate Underwriter/Portfolio Manager Sponsor Finance underwrites credit exposure for and large credit relationships and circumstances and actively manages Sponsor portfolios. Manages portfolio risk and adheres to all regulatory and compliance guidelines.
Responsibilities
- As an Associate this is an opportunity to work within a small and growing group for a top 15 Bank, with significant advancement opportunities both in the department and other functional areas of First Citizen's Commercial Bank.
- Candidates will work within a team construct to assist in the credit underwriting and portfolio management of diverse debt solutions for middle-market companies. Specifically: (i) LBO Financing, (ii) Acquisition Financing, (iii) Debt Refinancing, and (iv) Recapitalizations-working with potential borrowers, private equity teams, and other Lenders.
- Candidates will prepare cash flow models, conduct independent industry research, will assist in the underwriting of credits, and will manage accounts post close.
- Specific new business underwriting duties include: i) financial modeling; ii) preparing and presenting credit approval requests; iii) conduction independent industry research; iv) assist with funding and closing of transactions; and v) portfolio management of closed accounts.
- Specific portfolio management duties include: i) preparing waiver and amendment requests or underwriting add-on opportunities; ii) monitoring individual accounts for performance trends to ensure accurate and timely risk ratings; and iii) maintaining credit files in preparation for internal or external audits.
- Ensure compliance with all FCB policies and procedures.
- Firm understanding of FCB systems and resources.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of experience in Credit analysis, underwriting or Risk Management OR High School Diploma or GED and 6 years of experience in Credit analysis, underwriting or Risk Management Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in business, Accounting, Finance, Economics or related degree that incorporates financial analysis
- 2 years of analytical and underwriting in commercial lending or investing environment
- The completion of a formal credit training program and experience with sponsor finance transactions
- Demonstrated analytical and quantitative skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Time management skills to efficiently handle multiple tasks with changing priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate and problem solve to then take initiative to drive processes forward.
- Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
- Ability to function independently and as part of a small deal team.

Actual starting base pay will be determined based on skills, experience, location, and other non-discriminatory factors permitted by law. For some roles, total compensation may also include variable incentives, bonuses, benefits, and/or other awards as outlined in the offer of employment.
