Position Description

Performs Academic Advising, educational, professional, or other advanced Academic Advising or training at the individual or group level as appropriate. Responsibilities may include assisting in the analysis of special and/or complex problems. May supervise Academic Advisors or other employees. Performance is based on individual advising effectiveness and overall program results obtained. Work is performed under standard supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures.

About the Department and/or College

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/afs/) at Texas Tech University exists to address the challenges of a growing and changing world. We tackle these challenges by empowering students, advancing discovery, and disseminating knowledge. The department takes pride in its tradition of student success and experiential learning through curriculum taught by faculty who are dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, outreach, and engagement. Innovative creativity to address regional issues with global implications, while engaging with external community members through citizenship, are also hallmarks of the program. The department is housed in a modern research and teaching facility and is supported by several off-campus units (Equestrian Center, Equine Therapeutic Riding Teaching and Research Center, Grantham Companion Animal Research Facility, and an Agricultural Field Laboratory with canine, sheep/goat, swine, beef cattle, Burnett Center, and feed mill units). There are approximately 30 faculty members in the department, many of whom are leading researchers in their respective fields. Areas of research excellence include meat science and muscle biology, food science and safety, animal nutrition, health and welfare, and companion animal science. The department continues to experience unprecedented growth in student enrollment and is comprised of more than 1,450 undergraduate and graduate students.

Major/Essential Functions

• Assist students with registration process
• Assist students with curriculum advising
• Assist students with changing classes, adding and dropping
• Meet with students to plan schedules
• Assist students with major changes
• Assist with completion of a senior audit
• Communicate with students and faculty about academic issues
• Engage with students identified at risk
• Maintain database of graduates
• Handle all exit procedures
• Utilize current university software to assist with student success
• Participate in university and college events to meet with potential students and act as a source of information for them
• Develop departmental recruitment plan
• Coordinate enrollment opportunities with Davis College Student Success Center
• Collect, analyze and interpret exit survey data
• Prepare reports on retention metrics, trends and outcomes
• Monitor exit survey data and identify problems or concerns with career pathways and placement trends

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, plus one year relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• - Master's in Agriculture-based degree
• - Experience in Advising
