This position is in the J Lampe Lab, under the direction/supervision of Dr. Meredith Hullar. The lab conducts human microbiome studies using a variety of techniques. Main tasks will revolve around bacterial DNA extraction from stool, formalin fixed paraffin-embedded human tissue samples and anaerobic bacterial cultures.



Responsibilities

    Prepare samples (stool and tissue) for DNA extraction.
  • Prepare and label vials for sample processing and storage.
  • Prepare materials for DNA/RNA extractions, PCR and ddPCR assays according to specific protocols. Conduct microbial nucleic acid extractions.
  • Make, weigh and dilute solutions according to specific instructions.
  • Prepare media, conduct anaerobic experiments and maintain anaerobic hood.
  • Keep detailed laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays.
  • Perform experiments at the bench level to support investigative work.
  • Perform basic statistical analysis of test results and report on experimental results.
  • Operate and carry out basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain specimen and freezer storage management tool database up-to-date.
  • Assist in cleaning, operating, and organizing the lab.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy for all work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the biological sciences with strong background in molecular biology and cell biology, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated scientific knowledge in the area of study
  • Demonstrated basic laboratory skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highly self-motivated and trustworthy.
  • Willingness to take up new skills and responsibilities.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Capability of working independently in a teamwork environment.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $22.87 to $32.56 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
