The opportunity

The Office of Sustainability at Southern New Hampshire University is hiring two passionate and community-driven students to serve as Tree Ambassador Eco-Reps as part of a broader initiative to enhance urban forestry in underserved neighborhoods with the City of Manchester. These Eco-Reps, funded through the Urban Forest Equity Planning and Implementation grant, will play a key role in increasing tree canopy coverage, engaging the community, and promoting environmental justice in the City. Tree Ambassador Eco-Reps will receive training in arboriculture and urban forestry best practices, gaining valuable experience in the field while contributing to the City's green spaces. Tree Ambassador Eco-Reps will spend most of their time working directly with City staff, and directly in Manchester neighborhoods. Local residence and individual transportation are preferred.

These positions are ideal for a freshman or sophomore with an interest in community engagement, environmental education & health, and botany, forestry, trees, & nature in general! All majors are welcome, especially students pursuing environmental science, biology, or education.

All on-campus Eco-Reps will be required to support major events which include Good Stuff Donation Campaign in the Winter and Spring, and other major events that need core team member support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support tree planting activities, maintenance, and care, which includes watering, mulching, and pruning.
  • Conduct community outreach initiatives to educate residents about the benefits of urban forestry and proper tree care.
  • Aid in collecting data for tree inventories and canopy assessments utilizing GIS mapping tools.
  • Work with local organizations, schools, and community groups to foster environmental awareness.
  • Engage in training and certification programs to enhance skills in arboriculture and urban forestry.
  • Collaborate closely with city staff, consultants, and project partners to execute the Urban Forest Equity Plan.
  • Assist in removing hazardous and overgrown vegetation in designated areas.
  • Represent the City of Manchester at public events and urban forestry initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Full-time undergraduate student at Southern New Hampshire University.
  • Interest in urban forestry, environmental justice, and community engagement.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physical labor.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with diverse communities.
  • Willingness to participate in training and obtain relevant arboriculture certifications.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Applicants residing on-campus or within driving distance of Manchester and with reliable access to individual transportation is required (travel reimbursement is provided)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of tree care.
  • Experience in community outreach or volunteer coordination.
  • Familiarity with GIS mapping tools and data collection methods.
  • Arboriculture training or certification (provided by the City as part of employment).

Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $12.00 - $15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations.
