About the role: Position Summary: The Assistant Controller will play a critical role in the financial operations of Babel Street, supporting the Controller in all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls. This position requires a highly analytical and detail-oriented individual with strong leadership potential, capable of managing complex financial tasks and contributing to strategic financial planning. The Assistant Controller will be instrumental in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data, optimizing accounting processes, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, directly contributing to our mission of providing trusted intelligence. What you will do: Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Support the Controller in analyzing financial data, identifying trends, and providing insights to senior management, including detailed budget vs. actual and departmental analyses.
- Perform comprehensive revenue analysis across various customer segments and product lines, including managing contract-based revenue recognition.
General Ledger Management & Month-End Close:
- Lead and actively participate in the efficient execution of month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Oversee the review and approval of journal entries and account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy for complex areas such as accrued expenses and commissions.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger through diligent transaction coding and timely adjustments.
- Execute necessary recurring and ad-hoc journal entries, including amortization of various prepaids and deferred costs, fixed asset depreciation, intercompany adjustments, and accruals for significant expenses like interest, marketing, and bonuses.
- Proactively identify and correct miscoded items and streamline closing procedures.
Technical Accounting, including Revenue Recognition, and InternalControls:
- Manage the end-to-end revenue recognition process in accordance with ASC 606, including the review and approval of revenue arrangements, maintaining deferred revenue waterfalls, and performing manual adjustments for contract modifications.
- Ensure proper billing schedules are maintained and reconcile unbilled receivables balances.
- Perform technical accounting analysis includingaccounting for acquisitions, consolidations, foreign currency transactions and translations, leases, compensation, debt and equity, and other complex transactions
- Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial data.
Cash Flow & Expense Management:
- Oversee the accurate posting of cash receipts.
- Serve as the primary approver for vendor bills, ensuring correct coding, proper amortization setup, and adherence to contractual terms.
- Oversee and reconcile corporate credit card transactions, including verifying charges against receipts and ensuring proper coding and synchronization with the accounting system.
- Collaborate with various departments to ensure all financial transactions, including travel-related expenses, are properly accounted for.
Compliance & Audit Support:
- Ensure strict compliance with GAAP, tax regulations (including sales and use tax filings), and internal company policies.
- Act as a key liaison for internal and external audits, preparing documentation and responding to inquiries.
- Continuously monitor and adapt to changes in accounting regulations and best practices.
- Perform periodic reviews of reconciliations and accruals to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Team Leadership & Process Improvement:
- Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, fostering their professional development.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the finance department, including optimizing accounting systems and workflows.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to support broader organizational goals and special projects.
What you will bring:
- 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or senior accountant capacity.
- 3+ years of working experience in a high-growth backed software and/or subscriptions business, ideally one with institutional investors including private equity, venture capital and/or institutional debt lenders
- Demonstrated experience with comprehensive month-end close processes, including complex accruals, amortizations, and intercompany transactions.
- Strong background in revenue recognition principles and practical application.
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in enterprise-level accounting software, ideally NetSuite.
- Expert-level Microsoft Exceland systems skills.
- Experience with expense management and corporate card platforms (e.g., Ramp or something similar) is essential.
- Demonstrated expertise workingwith CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce) for contract review and revenue recognition.
- Experience with close management tools (e.g., FloQast) and data analytics platforms (e.g., Datarails) is a plus.
Knowledge:
- Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Solid knowledge of internal control frameworks.
- Familiarity with tax regulations and sales and use tax filings.
