About the Job

Our laboratory is currently seeking a Researcher 1 to help assist with projects focused on mechanisms of neurodegeneration in the context of demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis. They will be trained and perform a wide range of cell and molecular biology techniques facilitating the acquisition of data for publications and NIH grant applications. The projected start date for this position is in mid to late September.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
(These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks)

80% Research and data analysis:
* Learn and perform all aspects of immunohistochemical analysis for protein expression of tissue including tissue dissection, sectioning, staining and imaging using fluorescent microscopy and subsequent manual or automated analyses.
* Perform fluorescent in situ hybridization of relevant RNA transcripts in tissue
* Mouse colony management and husbandry, intraperitoneal and intravitreous injections
* Learn and employ a wide variety of molecular biology techniques including subcloning of novel plasmids for in vitro use or AAV production, DNA and RNA extractions, PCR and gel electrophoresis for genotyping, tissue culture of neuronal stem cells, and Western blot analyses.
* Basic coding to analyze single-nuclei RNA sequencing datasets in R using Seurat
* Select and adapt methods to meet their specific research needs and to assist in development of new laboratory techniques.
* Maintain a detailed notebook, tabulate and graph data, and interpret results

20% Research Support:
* Involved in the operation and maintenance of equipment, data management, ensuring lab safety, and ordering necessary supplies and reagents
* Preparation of solutions and buffers, hazardous waste management and laboratory organization
* Assistance with intracranial surgeries in mice
* Keep records of protocols and laboratory standard operating procedures
* Assistance in the preparation of data for manuscripts and grants.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (cell biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, genetics, etc) or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
* Previous experience working in a laboratory.
* A proactive person with strong organizational and communications skills who is able to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications
* At least one year of relevant research experience
* Experience with fluorescence microscopy or transmission electron microscopy
* Laboratory experience with common cell and molecular biology techniques including molecular cloning, western blots, PCR and gel electrophoresis, cell culturing etc.
* Experience handling and working with rodents (mice)
* Bioinformatics experience, particularly analyzing RNA sequencing datasets would be an asset

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $21.61 - $26.23 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
