The Facilities Management Department at WVU Tech is currently accepting applications for a Trades Specialist I. About the opportunity: The Trade Specialist I will perform various tasks in general construction, building maintenance and grounds work under the direction of Associate Director or Trades Specialist Lead II. What you'll do: Maintenance:
- Will respond to building maintenance requests; ability to diagnose and repair various equipment as needed. This may include, but is not limited to, electrical repairs, such as replacing switches, lamps, ballasts, outlets, breaker resets. Responsible for troubleshooting circuits up to 227 VAC, single phase,
- Responsible for plumbing related repairs and maintenance. This includes, but is not limited to, faucets, plugged drains, replacement of worn traps, repair of leaks and drips in various sinks, tubs, and plumbing systems.
- Performs all general maintenance duties related to mechanical equipment systems; this is not limited to, but may include routine maintenance and repairs on condensing and chilled water pumps, air handling units, cooling towers, fan coil units.
- Performs installation on all types of interior and exterior doors (wood or metal) including frames, jambs, door stops, interior and exterior trim and associated hardware such as hinges, locks, closures, panic hardware, etc.
- Perform installation on interior and exterior walls, partitions, paneling, siding, wallpaper plaster wall coverings, insulation, wood trim (i.e. moldings, casings, baseboards), metal studding; installs and finishes drywall.
- Must have the ability and knowledge to diagnose and repair pneumatic systems and controls.
- Will be responsible to follow preventative maintenance plans for all mechanical/electrical systems. This may include, but is not limited to, routine lubrications, calibrations, and adjustments; belt, gear box, and bearing replacements. Will also include routine and scheduled reviews and upgrades in control systems. Checking and maintaining all indoor and outdoor bulb changes.
- Operates as a first responder to odors, leaks, electrical failures, and plumbing related failures; should have the ability to redirect requests if additional support, or specialized staff is required.
- Responsible for daily carpentry requests.
- Will perform general painting duties, such as; painting walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture using enamel/latex paints with brushes, rollers, and low pressure sprayers; patches and prepares surfaces for painting to include finishing drywall or similar tasks requiring basic painting skills.
Grounds:
- Will be required to perform Roads and Grounds work; this will include, but is not limited to, shoveling walkways, operating snow removal machinery (blower, broom), maintaining barrier free entries and exits; applying de-icing products.
- Will also include general upkeep of outdoor space throughout the year; removing debris, lawn trimming, and sweeping walkways.
- Operates, services and maintain all grounds equipment, such as trucks, tractors, large seeders, riding mowers, snow removal, skid loaders, tilt bed trucks and steep slope mowing equipment.
- Operates trash compactor truck and drives vans on special occasions (graduation/homecoming).
- Operates various hand and power tools and equipment in performance of duties such as brooms, mops, rakes, shovels, dollies, hand trucks, vacuums, shampooers, power buffing machines, lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc.
- Mixes and dilutes commercial strength disinfectants, germicidal detergents, and other stringent cleaning solutions. Calculates area to determine amounts of cleaning solution required.
- Performs general tree maintenance as required.
Pay Grade: 13 Schedule: Mon - Fri 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Must have one of the following:
- Two (2) years of experience in general trades building maintenance in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades
- Completion of an associate's degree in building maintenance or other craft trade
- Completion of a two (2)-year accredited vocational craft trades program.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of building trades
- Ability to read blueprints
- Ability to operate a computer
- Ability to follow OSHA guidelines and associated codes
- Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts, and materials
- Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards
- Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above work standards
- Ability to rapidly learn all policies and procedures impacting the affected area
- Ability to organize work flow to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner
- Ability to operate a state vehicle
- Ability to lift materials over 75 pounds
- Ability to bend, stoop, walk, crawl, etc.
- Ability to work in a lift 30' feet off the ground
- Ability to work in inclement weather
- Basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
- Ability to work in confined areas
- Ability to follow safety requirements and use proper safety equipment
- Ability to perform physically demanding work such as digging a ditch, cleaning utility tunnels, pulling electrical cable, moving heavy equipment, shoveling snow, and the transporting and installation of materials
- Ability to follow specific directions on a general task
- Ability to use chemicals such as penetrating oil, glue, coil cleaner, paints, thinners, and lubricants
