Position Overview
The University Press of Kansas seeks a new Senior Marketing Manager

The University Press of Kansas is a leading university press in America's Heartland with a long history of publishing well-regarded scholarly books and regional titles. The Sr. Marketing Manager will lead the execution of the marketing department and substantially contribute to the future of the Press.

The Sr. Marketing Manger takes a leading role in executing book marketing for a list of 40-50 scholarly and trade books per year in collaboration with other marketing team members and intern support. The person in this position is responsible for supervising other team member's work and executing their own projects, particularly title marketing efforts related to publicity, advertising, digital and social media marketing, and event marketing. In addition to supervising a team of two full-time employees, the Sr. Marketing Manager is also a member of the Press's management team, reporting to the Director of the Press, collaborating closely on marketing strategy development.

Ideally, the position is on-site, but hybrid or remote options are available for well qualified candidates.

Job Description
50% Marketing Management
Responsible for all title marketing execution (directly or through reports) to drive book sales performance. As the senior member of the team, the Sr. Marketing Manager leads the execution on all high-level books with an emphasis on author management, publicity, and event management. Ensures title marketing planning and execution happens in a timely manner, including effective project management and KPI achievement across the team. Responsible for staff and strategic development in collaboration with the Press Director.

20% Team Management
Ensures team has a clear and robust marketing strategy across all relevant categories and channel. Executes against this strategy and measures performance through financial goals and other KPI's as set with Director.

20% Publicity Management
Oversees and executes publicity efforts including coordinating author events; preparing press releases, press kits, and other promotional materials; preparing advance bound galleys; distributing review copies; pitching timely news hooks for individual titles; contributing content to the Press website; and advising authors on the details of publicity and marketing campaigns.

10% Press Collaboration
Participates in Press management as a member of management team and supports acquisition efforts in terms of pitch development and title sales forecast development and accountability. Partners with Business & Sales Manager in terms retail marketing and other forms of sales enablement.

Position Requirements
Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Specifically, we cannot currently offer employment to candidates residing in the following states: California and Delaware. Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in a marketing or publicity position with a publisher or related organization.
  2. One (1) or more years of staff management experience.
  3. Superior written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Work experience that required strong organizational and interpersonal skills as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Work experience that required collaboration and demonstrated accountability to meet end goals as evidenced by application materials.
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with trade book marketing or publicity.
  2. Strong digital and social media marketing skills as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Experience with audience development and D2C strategies, tactics, and platforms as evidenced by application materials.
