Job Description

Rockwell Automation is seeking an experienced Senior Materials Engineer to join our Chemistry & Materials Engineering team in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In this pivotal role, reporting to the Manager, Chemistry and Materials Engineering, you will lead complex materials investigations, perform advanced analytical testing using state-of-the-art instrumentation, and collaborate with diverse teams to guide product and process improvements. You'll serve as a technical expert in materials science, routinely conducting root-cause failure analyses and supporting cross-functional teams with actionable insights. This position offers a dynamic environment where innovation, precision, and problem-solving are at the core of every challenge.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and analyze material samples for investigations involving complex variables; adapt methodologies based on initial evaluations to ensure accurate results.
  • Operate and maintain advanced Chemistry & Materials Engineering instrumentation, including:
    • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
    • Energy Dispersive X-ray System (EDS)
    • Wavelength Dispersive X-ray System (WDS)
    • Real-time X-ray systems
    • X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) for elemental analysis and plating thickness measurements
    • X-ray Diffraction (XRD)
    • Salt spray and mixed flowing gas test chambers
    • High-resolution digital microscopes
  • Coordinate analytical workflows between materials engineers and chemists to optimize lab efficiency and throughput.
  • Collaborate closely with chemists to resolve technical challenges and ensure comprehensive analysis.
  • Conduct detailed Root-Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA) to identify and address product and process issues.
  • Serve as a technical representative on cross-functional teams across the organization, providing expert guidance on materials-related concerns.
The Essentials - You Will Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • The ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
The Preferred - You Might Also Have:
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science
  • Minor or second degree in Chemistry or a closely related discipline
  • Experience performing fracture analysis, environmental testing, material processing
  • Extensive hands-on experience with instrumentation, including SEM, EDS, WDS, XRF, XRD, and real-time X-ray systems.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9000 & 14000 standards, and other relevant quality, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Experience working with external customers and suppliers
