The Department of Biology in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Genomic Sequencing Specialist.

About the Opportunity

This individual will lead the genomic sequencing of infectious disease targets from wastewater. They will also assist in bioinformatic analysis and reporting tasks directly relevant to sequence data.

What You'll Do



  • Sequencing library preparation and genomic sequencing.
  • Data analysis, including base calling, assembly or other post-run processing.
  • Data management, including submission to long-term repositories.
  • Data interpretation and report generation.
  • Ordering supplies and consumables relevant to genomic sequencing.
  • Oversight of student and/or temporary workers in sequencing-related tasks.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biology, genomics, or other related life sciences discipline.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience involving:

    • Post-doctoral or commercial laboratory experience in life science discipline, preferably microbiology or infectious disease related topics.
    • Genomic sequencing, specifically MinION or P2Solo platforms.
    • Work in aseptic or sterile conditions, in biosafety cabinet and PCR workstation environments, with BSL-2 pathogens.
    • Basic sequence analysis protocols, including BLAST, minimap2, and freyja.


  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience using laboratory equipment necessary for sample extraction, concentration, and sequencing library preparation including Thermo Kingfisher Apex, Qubit, and Agilent TapeStation.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Demonstrated ability to use EPI2ME software for sequence analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to use MinKNOW software for genomic sequencer control.
  • Ability to troubleshoot sequencing library preparation protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to access remote data storage and analysis devices through Globus, SSH, or other interfaces.
  • Ability to use basic molecular laboratory software including Excel, Word, Benchling.
  • Ability to use QC laboratory equipment including Tapestation and Qubit.

  • Pipetting small volumes.
  • Working within a biosafety cabinet or PCR workstation.
