Summary: Under the general supervision of Cytology Technologist Specialist and the Pathology Manager, performs a wide variety of duties relative to the preparation and record keeping of cytology specimens for microscopic examination by a Cytologist or Pathologist. Resolves issues within the scope of authority or refers properly after obtaining sufficient background information. Responsibilities: Picks up and logs specimens, transcribes testing requests and specimen descriptions. Verifying track incomplete or discrepant patient information. Completes billing information. Prepares cytology specimens using carious methods to insure maximum diagnostic tissue for evaluation. Handles infectious specimens and materials and disposes of them according to department procedures. Maintains work area in a neat and orderly condition at all times. Labels, stains, coverslips, and files slides. Performs routine stock work. Assists in record keeping and maintenance of quality control records. Maintains current knowledge of safety injury management and infection control in accordance with established hospital and department policies, procedures, and objectives. Assists supervisor with non-invasive laboratory assignments as needed. Performs other related duties as required. Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of an Associates Degree in Laboratory Science or college level courses in Biology and Chemistry. General knowledge of laboratory tests and procedures for handling laboratory specimens for processing within the cytology laboratory, in order to respond to requests for information; to receive, prepare specimens, identify specimens requiring special handling, to be knowledgeable in use of universal precautions. Ability to perform independently within a broad scope of department policies and practices. Organizational and clerical skills to maintain a variety of logs and records. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: Six months cytology laboratory experience, additional relevant education may be substituted for experience. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Some exposure to odors, chemicals, and infectious materials when handling laboratory specimens.
