Position Description:

In the role of a Communications Consultant you will be working in our Cancer Center.

The Communications Consultant will develop and implement strategic communication initiatives to advance the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Cancer Center mission, ensuring alignment and partnership with the MCW Office of Communications. This role is responsible for creating and managing content across internal, external, and social media channels, including e-newsletters, web pages, and digital engagement strategies. By collaborating with team members and contributing to editorial planning, this position helps elevate cancer research, discovery, and innovation through compelling storytelling and effective communication.

Primary Functions

  • Seek out and write stories that promote the mission, vision, culture, and priorities of the MCW Cancer Center, in collaboration with the Cancer Center communications team and MCW Office of Communications.
  • Write, edit, and produce content for email newsletters, intranet and external website, magazine publications, and social media content, under the direction of the current editor, to be reviewed and approved by key stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies, content campaigns and plans for less complex initiatives and projects.
  • Work independently to identify and gather information with leaders; consult on communications approaches; write and edit for engagement; and ensure that messaging supports the institution's core values and advances strategic objectives.
  • Support the maintenance of distribution lists, the publishing process for Cancer Center newsletters, and day-to-day updates to the intranet and external websites.
  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate communications data. Report communications data and progress to department stakeholders including the Communications leader and other leaders.
  • Ensure that assigned projects and deliverables are high-quality, completed on time and reflect the input of identified reviewers.
  • Partner in the development of integrated communication plans (as assigned) to determine the appropriate channel and audience mix.
  • Assure compliance with regulatory and institutional policies.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills to engage diverse audiences, including researchers, clinicians, patients, and the community.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific and medical concepts into clear, accessible content.
  • Knowledge of healthcare communication, cancer research, and the academic medical environment.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic communication plans across multiple platforms.
  • Proficiency in digital content creation, including e-newsletters, web content, and social media engagement.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Data analysis and reporting skills to track engagement trends and inform content strategy.
  • Ability to create visually compelling presentations and refine decks for leadership and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience with web content management systems and digital communication tools.
  • Demonstrate strong collaboration skills to work effectively with researchers, clinicians, and communication professionals.
  • Keen attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all communications.
  • Problem-solving ability and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Schedule:




Monday - Friday 8:00-5:00 with occasional nights and weekends



Position Requirements:

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree

Minimum Required Experience: 5-7 years of integrated communications experience. Demonstrated experience with strategy, planning and program management.

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field

Preferred Experience: At least 5 years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, agency, marketing, or related communication field.
