Job Duties:
Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the UW Oshkosh Police Officer serves a community of around 11,000 students and employees; covering 58 buildings on 184 acres along the Fox River in the heart of Oshkosh. UW Oshkosh Police Officers are sworn law enforcement professionals (State of Wisconsin LESB certified) who exercise full statutory arrest authority while carrying out the Department's mission: to serve our community by building relationships, reducing fear, and solving problems - treating every person with the fairness and respect we would want for ourselves, and approaching every interaction as an opportunity to make a positive difference. Key Responsibilities
Provide a full range of law enforcement services including enforcing laws, investigating complaints, maintaining order, assisting people, identifying criminal activity, and apprehending offenders when necessary. Actively engage with students, employees, and visitors to build relationships that foster trust and develop a shared responsibility for campus safety. Partner with the community to identify the root causes of concerns and work toward sustainable solutions that enhance safety and wellbeing. Analyze data and trends to support crime prevention efforts. Conduct complex investigations, collect and process evidence, prepare thorough written reports, and testify in proceedings when required. Maintain proficiency in the safe use of police equipment, defensive and arrest tactics, and firearms in compliance with state law and department policy. Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, University departments, mental health providers, and human service agencies to provide coordinated responses. Support special details such as crowd management, special event security, and dignitary protection.
Specialized Opportunities Officers may be selected for specialized roles such as Police Training Officer (PTO), Evidence Technician or Custodian, K9 Handler, Bicycle Patrol Officer, or Drone Team member. They may also be eligible to serve on multi-jurisdictional teams including the Winnebago County SWAT Team, Dive Team, or Accident Reconstruction Team. Work Schedule Currently, Officers are working 12-hour shifts with every other weekend being three (3) days off.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
- Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
- Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
- Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community
- Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
Department: University Police Compensation: $26.00 - 35.50 per hour (certifiable - may be eligible for future step increases)* or $23.00 per hour (non-certifiable - may be eligible for future step increases) *Applicants with previous certified sworn law enforcement experience may qualify for lateral transfer, progressing to the pay step that coincides with 75% of their recognized experience. Recruitment Bonus: Police Officers may be eligible for a recruitment bonus! A sign-on bonus of $1,000 will be awarded to eligible employees shortly after the employee's start date and in linewith the normal payroll processing schedules. A bonus of $2,500 will be awarded to eligible employeesafter successful completion of the new hire probationary period.

Preferred Qualifications:
Effective written and oral communication skills to communicate, interact with, and be respectful of a community of students, co-workers, faculty/staff, guests, and the general public. Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and principles embodied in case law (court decisions and the ability to apply this knowledge with discretion as it pertains to the laws of arrest, search/seizure, collection and preservation of evidence, and use of force) as well as knowledge of federal and state regulations affecting employee health and welfare. Demonstrated knowledge of current investigatory techniques and practices. Demonstrated ability to observe and accurately recall facts or details about persons, events, accident or crime scenes, physical conditions, and behaviors of individuals. Demonstrated ability to quickly assess situations and rapidly consider various options in choosing a course of action. Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend, and execute complex written material and verbal instructions. Demonstrated ability to complete multiple tasks under stressful or crisis conditions. Experience in basic computer skills including, but not limited to: the use of Microsoft Office programs, TraCs, and various Records Management systems. Skilled in the use of enforcement and other types of equipment such as firearms, various enforcement devices, photographic equipment, voice recording equipment, etc... Prior customer service experience. Certification, or eligibility for certification upon hire, as a law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB). At least one year of experience in law enforcement (Police Officer, Corrections, Community Service Officer, or something related). Previously, or currently certified or trained as an instructor in a law enforcement discipline (DAAT, firearms, EVOC, Taser, ICAT, etc...).
