Position Description

Safely performs journeyperson level tasks in the fabrication, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of fixtures, equipment, structures, buildings, and built-in components for Texas Tech facilities. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Reviews new construction project plans and prepares material lists required for projects. Repairs and/or installs framing, rough carpentry, drywall, doors frames and hardware, acoustical ceiling, ceramic tile, brick or CMU block, floor coverings, base, paint, weatherproofing, specialties, MEP trim-out, storefront, glass/glazing, millwork, and concrete. Assembles of furniture and equipment. Repairs water-proofs various types of roofs.
  • Safe demolition of existing structures and/or assemblies. Provides protection of personnel, adjacent installations and facilities.
  • Assesses job material requirements and prepares requisition for materials from supply warehouse or vendor.
  • Constructs, repairs and installs doors, cabinets, shelves, windows and wood and glass panels. Perform alterations to existing structures by installing or removing walls, partitions or similar construction.
  • Trains personnel in the apprenticeship training program and temporary laborers on job-related maintenance tasks.
  • Maintains vehicles, tools, equipment and materials in an orderly and safe condition. Operates vehicles including pickups, trucks and vans. Secures vehicle, equipment and areas of operation.
  • Assists Project Team in developing projects, preparing cost estimates, coordinating work requirements and providing supervision for new construction within area of responsibility.
  • Provides assistance in the operational control, direction and management with the Project Team work center to include: operations, maintenance, renovations and new construction. Assists crew members on job assignments.

Required Qualifications

Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable to operate motor vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Basic knowledge of operation and safe use of all power and hand tools/equipment common to the construction field. Good communication skills to effectively interact with customers and shop personnel. Must have a valid driver's license and must be insurable to operate TTU vehicles.

Minimum Hire Rate

Compensation will be based on the knowledge, skills, abilities, and defined years of experience to align with the appropriate career levels for the Tradeperson specialty in the Operations Division Facilities Maintenance Career Plan.

Pay Statement
