OREGON YOUTH AUTHORITY FACILITY MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST Woodburn, Oregon - MACLAREN YOUTH CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Join the Oregon Youth Authority as a Facility Maintenance Specialist at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility, where you will put your skilled trade abilities to work in support of a safe, secure, and well-maintained campus. In this role, you will perform a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks-spanning plumbing, carpentry, painting, welding, groundskeeping, general building upkeep, and vehicle/small engine repair. You may work across all trade areas or focus on specific specialties based on agency needs. This position is located in a close-custody environment where security, safety, and vigilance are top priorities. You will also have the opportunity to mentor and train youth work crews, teaching them practical trade skills, safe tool use, and positive work habits. Our ideal candidate has hands-on experience maintaining and repairing buildings, fixtures, and equipment; can troubleshoot and adapt to shifting priorities; and understands maintenance safety procedures. Strong communication, computer skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce and youth population are essential. Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform skilled maintenance and repair work on buildings, vehicles, and equipment in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, welding, groundskeeping, and small engine repair.
  • Plan and complete maintenance projects safely and efficiently, ensuring compliance with building codes, safety rules, and agency procedures.
  • Supervise and train youth work crews, teaching practical trade skills, tool safety, and positive work habits.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot systems or equipment, determine repair needs, and coordinate with contractors and vendors when necessary.
  • Maintain safety and security in a close-custody environment, remaining alert to potential breaches and taking immediate action when needed.

How to qualify:

  • Two years of: a) general building maintenance; b) carpentry; c) electrical; d) mechanical; e) painting; or f) plastering experience.

A journeyman's license/card in any of the above trades will substitute for this experience. Be sure a copy of your journeyman's license/card is attached to your application form.

Special Requirements:

  • Driver License Required: Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

Required Skills: (Assessed in your application materials, skills assessments, and/or interviews)

  • Provide polite and professional service to youth, staff, contractors, and other "customers" of the facility.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, youth and vendors, written and verbal.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instruction, policies, and guidelines.
  • Read and perform work using blueprints and shop drawings.
  • Must have the fine motor skills required to safely use test equipment, instruments, and tools.
  • The analytical ability to resolve complex mechanical problems and to contribute creatively to problem solving is required.
  • Ability to adapt to change and be able to give and receive feedback.

What We Are Looking For: Preference may be given to applicants that can demonstrate these skills:

  • Experience performing maintenance repairs on buildings, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Ability to improvise when necessary and shift focus from equally urgent demands with minimal notice.
  • Ability to inspect malfunctioning equipment and determine a plan for repair, modification, or replacement.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance procedures including safety precautions.
  • Desire to work with a diverse workforce and youth population.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Excellent communication skills assessed at the time of interview.

Working Conditions:

  • May require responding to emergencies, equipment failures, snow and ice storms outside of regular working hours. Position is subject to afterhours call back. May be required to work overtime.
  • All OYA facilities and camps are tobacco free environments
  • Work requires heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, exposure to temperature extremes, harmful chemicals, noise, poor lighting and air quality, and working in heating and plumbing tunnels, on ladders, scaffolds, high buildings or platforms and occasionally requires working in inclement weather conditions.
  • Must demonstrate the skill and ability to operate all vehicles and equipment that may be used to fulfill the job functions such as driving bus in morning to pick up youth offenders and transport to work areas.
  • This position may require the employee to travel to other OYA facilities located throughout the state.
  • Daily contact with youth who exhibit hostile, assaultive behavior. This position is located in close custody facilities which requires, as a primary responsibility, strict adherence by each employee to security measures at all times to assure the custody, control and supervision of youth.
  • Staff is expected to be a positive example and role model for other staff and youth. The staff is to be supportive toward OYA, YCF and camps policies and procedures. Being a positive role model includes but is not limited to: reliability; dependability, regular and punctual attendance in order to provide consistent services and provide public safety; neat person appearance; treating all humans with respect; and being a law-abiding citizen.
