Overview

Appointment Type: Full-Time Regular (FTR)

Location: Oak Ridge, TN

*Salary Range: $101,816 - $149,805

PURPOSE: To be an active member of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) response asset; providing advice to the medical team regarding the magnitude of ionizing radiation injuries and illnesses. Providing extensive health physics expertise and guidance on complex problems involving the effects of ionizing radiation, radiation protection, contamination control, and radiation dose calculation. Participating in research, writing peer-reviewed manuscripts, and developing and delivering educational materials to an audience of diverse educational and experiential backgrounds in a clear and concise manner.



Responsibilities

    Supports the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS) 24/7 radiation emergency medical response capability as a health physicist (HP).
  • Responsible for REAC/TS dose assessment response, advice, and consultation with REAC/TS staff and callers for information and/or assistance.
  • Supports the integration of radiation emergency medicine and health physics.
  • Maintains expertise in ionizing radiation physics, instrumentation, and contamination control.
  • Responsible for REAC/TS operational health physics readiness for mobilization or deployment.
  • Ensures that REAC/TS radiation detection and measurement equipment are properly calibrated, operational, and ready for use during exercises/drills and radiation incident response.
  • Provides expertise for REAC/TS continuing educational programs on- and off-site.
  • Develops and delivers lectures related to physics and health physics in radiation emergency response/consequence management.
  • Prepares training materials for REAC/TS courses and REAC/TS staff.
  • Actively participates in course drills and demonstrations.
  • Ensures compliance with DOE, federal and state, and ORISE/ORAU orders, directives, policies, and/or laws related to handling radiological materials.
  • Maintains personal readiness for mobilization and deployment.


Qualifications

Masters in Health Physics or related fields and 3 to 5 years' experience; or Bachelors in Health Physics and 5 to 7 years' experience.

  • Experience should demonstrate the ability to collect data about a specific situation; analyze and interpret the data; and develop recommendations for response.
  • Teaching experience with the ability to articulate technical subject matter to adult learners is required.
  • Requires frequent travel within the United States and international travel is likely.
  • The position may require deployment.
  • Ability to be on call for week(s) at a time.
  • Must be able to obtain a DOE Q Clearance within a reasonable period (not to exceed 24 months) and must maintain the Q Clearance as a job requirement.
  • Extensive knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices in the health physics discipline is required. Examples of these areas of knowledge include:
    • Effects of ionizing radiation
    • Contamination control
    • Radiation dose calculation
    • Radiation protection
    • Applicable regulations and accepted guidelines for general occupational and radiological safety
    • Emergency response organization
    • Management of personnel in emergency response situations
  • Working knowledge in communicating risk to both technical and non-technical audiences, as well as a working knowledge of medical terminology, hazardous materials and emergency response, and radiation biology.
  • Requires capability of collecting data about a specific situation; analyzing and interpreting the data; developing recommendations; and communicating these results to the medical staff.
  • Accomplished skill in developing and presenting technical concepts to mixed audiences is crucial.
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) and/or advanced degree is preferred.

*The candidate's starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate's qualifications to determine salary.
