JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a Laboratory Chemist to perform chemical, physical, and electrical tests on insulating liquid samples using analytical techniques and instrumentation. This role will involve performing wet chemistry tests and operating analytical instruments. Responsibilities include analyzing samples and associated data, instrument operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance in a dynamic, fast-paced, high-volume testing environment. This role will be based in our Marlborough, MA office reporting to the Director of Laboratory Services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Analysis/Reporting
* Primary focus of the job is to perform physical, chemical, and electrical tests using established SOPs and ASTM, IEC, and ISO test methods
* Schedule, prepare and analyze samples based on method requirements within expected turnaround time (TAT) requirements
* Write technical reports and communicate testing status/results verbally and in writing
* Manage sample testing queues and schedule work to meet critical customer deadlines
* Identify samples where additional verification testing is needed prior to submitting results to customers
* Identify and report errant analysis that may affect the quality or the integrity of the data and work with the technical team and management on solutions and CAPA (corrective action, preventative action) measures
* Support testing and research activities in multiple areas of the lab as needed
* Assist with customer technical questions in the absence of lab manager, lab director or VP

Analytical Equipment Troubleshooting and Maintenance
* Maintain and repair analytical equipment
* Support preventative maintenance programs to limit downtime of the analytical equipment
* Maintain a clean and safe working environment
* Perform manufacturer recommended maintenance/troubleshooting on analytical test equipment
* Making decisions about instrument operation/maintenance based on SQC analysis
* Perform other troubleshooting duties as needed

Quality



  • Prepare and analyze quality control standards
  • Make decisions on instrument operation based on quality control sample
    analysis and SQC charts
  • Uses proper controls for analytical instrumentation, validates and verifies data and takes corrective action when necessary
  • Supports Inter-Laboratory Studies (ILS) and Proficiency Testing Programs (PTP)
  • Performs work in accordance to ISO 17025 standard
  • Update and maintain documentation regarding SOPs/methods and drive for continuous improvement of test methods
  • Maintain equipment lists, calibration records, and consumable/chemical certificates


Research
* Doble is engaged is significant research in our industry and from time to time this job will be required to assist with research projects for internal use, papers and/or conferences, or customer requests
* This research requires great attention to detail and superior communication skills
* Identify potential new testing procedures and research projects to support the power industry or to serve as additional diagnostic tests.
* Support new method development projects

Other Duties
* Train new employees and interns
* Order lab supplies and monitor chemical and consumable product inventory
* Support continuous improvement projects
* Other duties as assigned by laboratory management

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Minimum Associates Degree in chemistry, physics, biological sciences; Bachelor's preferred. Work experience may be substituted in lieu of degree for well qualified candidates.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
* 2-5 years of hands-on laboratory experience preferably in a high-volume, fast turnaround environment
* Detail orientated, able to record/analyze data and make qualitative observations where required.
* Strong oral/written communication, organizational, critical thinking, and time management skills
* Ability to proactively communicate status and issues
* Must be able to work overtime and sometimes respond to after-hours customer emergencies
* General analytical instrumentation and bench chemistry skills
* Strong math and computer skills including MS Office
* Knowledge of proper safe handling of chemicals and ability to maintain a clean and safe workspace
* Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic and collaborative working environment
* Job involves working was hazardous chemicals, standing, walking, a lot of hand work such as that required for sample preparation and the ability to lift 10 pounds on a routine basis and up to 50 pounds with assistance occasionally.
* Must be self-motivated, forward thinking, and a problem solver

Job Description
* Self-starting attitude with the ability to learn many analytical techniques
* Ability to work on multiple projects in tandem

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE (Not Required):
* Experience with ISO 17025 or ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
* Analytical instrument experience: FT-IR, gas chromatography (GC), ICP, HPLC, ect.
* Certifications in analytical equipment training is helpful but not required
* Analytical instrument troubleshooting and repair skills
* OSHA HAZWOPER and/or RCRA training
* Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is often required to stand, sit, use computers, read, write, type, use fax machines, use copy machines, file paperwork, use telephones, and utilize written and oral communication to interact with clients, co-workers and customers. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this job. Must be capable of lifting 50 pounds.

Actual base salary offered to the hired applicant will be determined based on their work location, level, qualifications, job related skills, as well as relevant education or training experience.
Hourly Pay Range Minimum $29.76 - Midpoint $37.20
