The opportunity

Southern New Hampshire University is seeking an Animal Care Specialist to work onsite at the NH Audubon Massabesic Center in Auburn, NH. Under direct supervision of the Animal Programs Curator, perform animal care duties for the animal ambassador collection at NH Audubon's Massabesic Center. Support environmental education efforts to enhance visitor experiences while promoting our mission to protect New Hampshire's environment for wildlife and for people.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform all aspects of animal husbandry

  • Clean Enclosures, prepare diet and feed animals

  • Provide behavioral and environment enrichment

  • Monitor animal health & update records

  • Interact with and answer questions for visitors, including school groups and the general public

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in classes with SNHU

  • Federal Work-Study as part of the financial aid package

  • Reliable transportation

  • Comfort with talking to the general public and working with children

  • Ability to bend, stoop, and lift up to 25lbs

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Some animal husbandry experience

  • Knowledge of caring for reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and/or aquatic tanks

Work Hours:

Sun-Tues 10am-1pm, Weds-Sat 11am-5pm. This position is designed to be shared between three employees who will work alternate, sometimes overlapping shifts, up to 20 hours per week for each employee.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will gain experience with best practices in animal husbandry related to reptiles, amphibians, aquatic wildlife, and invertebrates. Students will learn environmental education concepts and teaching methods. Students will improve customer service and communication skills and will glean insight into non-profit organization operations.

Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $12.00 - $15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations.
