Position description

The Department of Design announces a temporary lecturer position to teach a section of DES 77, during the Fall 2025 quarter.

DES 77: Introduction to Structural Design for Fashion -

Studio-4 hours; lecture/discussion-2 hours. Prerequisite: DES 1 (can be concurrent) or consent of instructor. Priority given to Design majors. Study and practice of designing clothing for the human body. Emphasis on flat pattern development, structural joining sequences and the development of three-dimensional garments from two-dimensional drawings. This is a fast-paced, hands-on course designed to introduce students to foundational skills in sewing, pattern making, and garment construction within a collaborative studio environment.

Design at UC Davis is unique within the University of California system and presents itself as a global model for design education with a research focus.

Applicants must have professional experience in a design field related to the curriculum.

Appointment Dates:

Fall Quarter: September 22 - December 12, 2025

Responsibilities:

Deliver in-person, studio-based instruction with a strong emphasis on live demonstrations.

Teach core techniques in sewing, pattern drafting, and garment assembly to students with varying skill levels.

Foster a safe, organized, and inclusive learning environment.

Guide students through individual and group projects, emphasizing craftsmanship, efficiency, and creative problem-solving.

Prepare and maintain instructional materials, tools, and equipment.

Qualifications:

Appropriate professional degree, e.g. MFA, or equivalent training and professional experience.

Demonstrated teaching ability and experience. A developing record of creative, scholarly, or professional achievement in an area of expertise related to the subject area, as described in this announcement.

Demonstrated expertise in sewing, pattern making, and apparel construction.

Prior teaching experience in a studio or workshop setting preferred.

Ability to provide clear, engaging live demonstrations in a fast-paced learning environment.

Strong organizational skills and adaptability.

Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching practice.

Salary and Appointment Level:

Commensurate with degree and experience.
