Position Summary
The Academic Fieldwork Coordinator is responsible for the entry-level OTD (EOTD) & post-professional OTD (POTD) fieldwork programs. Acting as liaison between the Dept and clinicians providing fieldwork education experiences to EOTD and OTD students, coordinate fieldwork educational programs, plan/participate in fieldwork & didactic education of occupational students, monitor/evaluate students' fieldwork performance, facilitates professional interaction & consultation, develop operational plans to supply education for fieldwork educators, develops & manages clinical contracts between the university and fieldwork sites, & evaluates the effectiveness of the fieldwork educators' & clinical facilities' educational program via personal interaction & fieldwork site visits. Per the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education "A" standard, the AFWC may be assigned other institutional duties that do not interfere with the management & administration of the fieldwork program.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee fieldwork assignments and placements for entry-level occupational therapy doctorate students and post-professional occupational therapy doctorate students in a variety of clinical and community-based settings. Educate students in the process for fieldwork matching through a series of classes. Advise students regarding their fieldwork performance and oversee remediation plans. Recruit and develop potential fieldwork sites and maintain relationships with current fieldwork sites. Assure students' compliance with fieldwork health and additional requirements. Develop materials for student fieldwork orienatation.
  • Develop plans for student fieldwork, in collaboration with the fieldwork sites, to maximize student learning and meet the needs of the sites.
  • Provide direction to fieldwork educators at fieldwork sites and conduct on-site visits.
  • Collaborate with fieldwork sites in establishing fieldwork objectives.
  • Facilitate professional interaction and consultation between the Department of Occupational Therapy and fieldwork sites
  • Establish and maintain Student Placement Agreements (contracts) for fieldwork and practicum sites.
  • Provide educational programs for fieldwork educators.
  • Specifically responsible for the program's compliance with the fieldwork-related accreditation requirements as defined by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)
  • Teaching and course development/documented expertise in area(s) of teaching responsibility and knowledge of the content delivery method.
  • Participate in departmental and college committees, including post-professional OTD student committees
  • Publish in refereed articles and other types of publications (e.g., practice-grounded articles) that impact the practice of occupational therapy
  • Present at state and national meetings
  • Participate in public service activities
  • Participate in scholarly activities either as independent scholars or in collaboration with a tenured/tenure track faculty member, clinical faculty member, and/or clinician from UIC or outside of UIC
  • Provide creative leadership in further development of graduate programming
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Completed doctoral degree (OTD, PhD, EdD)
    Licensed or eligible for licensure as an occupational therapist in the State of Illinois
    Three years experience in occupational therapy treatment settings
    Strong organization and interpersonal skills
    Experience teaching or mentoring students in a professional academic program or as a clinical fieldwork educator
    Must have documented expertise in their area(s) of teaching responsibility and knowledge of the content delivery method.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Previous experience as an academic fieldwork coordinator or educator Managerial and supervisory experience
    Record of Applied Scholarship
    Record of community and/or professional service
    Record of supervising OTD students as chair or committee member
