Job Summary

The Clinical Data Analyst's primary responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data to the designated data base including National Cardiovascular Data Registry, NY State Department of Health registry, Society for Thoracic Surgeons registry, etc. This is accomplished through high-quality clinical screening, data compilation, documentation and entry into the appropriate database of all eligible cases for the medical center.The Clinical Data Analyst also works closely with the members of the Division of Cardiology to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as may be identified.

Essential Functions

  • 1. Chart abstraction and data collection through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record system into the appropriate web based database for the specified patient population based on strict data collection criteria
    * Data is abstracted timely and accurately into web-based data collection tool.
  • 2. Contacting patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications postoperatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed at the hospital.
    * Follow-up phone calls will be done timely and documented in the appropriate section in NSQIP
  • 3. Serving as an educational resource for internal and external audiences by developing educational material and delivering presentations
    * Able to retrieve reports, understand and analyze and interpret data so information can be used for performance improvement initiatives
  • 4. Establishing effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records and the Information Systems Departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program.
    * Attend departmental Ql meetings as appropriate, Liaison with members of support teams by identifying specific contact person for specific goals.
  • 5. Enhancing education and maintaining competencies and standards to keep pace with new changes
    * Attending national conferences pertaining to the program as requested. Participating conference calls, educational webinars, etc.
  • 6. Identification of surgical patients for inclusion in the program registry through the application of strict program inclusion/exclusion criteria and randomization protocol
    * Follow strict guidelines for appropriate patient selection for inclusion as specified by Operations/Specifications Manual
  • 7. Attain and maintain appropriate required certification
    * NSQIP: SCRs must take initial SCR certification exam 4-6 months after successful completion of training modules and participation in training calls.
    Annual re-taking of certification exam (prior to expiration of current certification.
  • 8. Meeting the caseload accrual requirement per year through the correct application of the program's protocol.
    * ex. TransQIP All kidney transplant patients, ex. NSQIP Procedure Targeted (General/ Vascular or Multispecialty): 15 "Essential" cases/cycle followed by 25 or more Procedure Targeted cases/cycle based on site's sampling guidance, ex. MBSAQIP 100% adult and pediatric bariatric surgery cases.
  • 9. Ensure reliable data collection of postoperative occurrences.
    * Attending weekly Morbidity & Mortality conferences
  • 10. Demonstrating applicability of the methodology and the reliability of definitions utilized by reviewers within the program through Inter-Rater Reliability (IAR) testing.
    * Achieve 95% or greater IRR for NSQIP
  • 11. Identifying areas for streamlining and process improvement in the data collection process
    * Barriers to deadlines will be identified and resolved.
  • 12. Utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the Program.
    * Proficiency in using IT systems: Carecast, EPF, CEMR, EPIC,
  • 13. Utilization of software applications available at the site for data collection and analysis.
    * Proficiency in using IT systems: NSQIP, TransQIP, VQI, MBSAQIP etc.
  • 14. Providing accurate and timely entry of data into the program's website and assuring the transmission of completed data.
    * Data collection and entry will be done in a timely manner. All deadlines will be met.
  • 15. Reviewing weekly site accrual report on the website and responding to accrual report alerts.
    * Enter the appropriate number of individual cases as required by the specific registry.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree as an RN required
  • New York State RN, NP or PA license required
  • 3+ years of clinical experience involving the direct care of patients as evidenced by an RN, NP or PA degree with prior practice experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in an administrative setting involving organizational skills, independent decision making and interaction with multidisciplinary team members
  • Completion of training and through understanding of NCDR, New York Department of Health, and STS TAVR registries. Participation in ongoing training via continuing education modules, regular conferences calls, and annual conferences as appropriate.
