- Receives and accession all Surgical and Cytology specimens, ensuring acceptability and resolving any specimen problems.
- Accurately identifies specimens submitted by comparing container information with the surgical requisition accompanying the specimen
- Selects and identifies tissues for microscopic study and determines proper fixative solutions for maintaining
tissues. - Dictates a summary of the patient's clinical history and the gross anatomical findings in consultation with the pathologist's observation and gross diagnosis.
- Selects and identifies tissues for microscopic study and determines proper fixative solutions in which tissues will be maintained
- Specimen photography and radiography as needed.
- Obtains specimens from the operating rooms and performs appropriate examination, including frozen sectioning, and reported gross.
- Follows established procedures for safe disposal of bio-hazardous waste.
- Ensures adequate supplies used in the area. Cleans tools used in the section.
- Accurately completes all paperwork associated with the work of the Section.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals arid other hospital personnel.
Qualifications
Must meet one or more of the following requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree, but a Master's preferred
- Successful completion of an accredited post-baccalaureate Pathologists' Assistant training program.
- Must be ASCP PA certified
- 3 years of hands-on experience in the field
