Job Title: Vehicle Electrical Controls System Engineer III

Operating Company: Environmental Solutions Group - Heil Environmental

Reports to: Electrical Development Supervisor

Department: Engineering

POSITION SUMMARY:

In this exciting Electrical Engineering position, you will help shape the future of the refuse collection industry by modernizing vehicle control systems. The role focuses on developing intuitive Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) & Software development for refuse body controls. You will play a key role in modernizing control architectures and enhancing user interaction with complex machinery. You will be responsible for the design, development, software implementation, and testing of control systems that enable vehicles to collect, store, and process refuse according to customer requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing control systems specific to the refuse industry
  • Writing production-quality software
  • Creating prototypes to evaluate preliminary designs
  • Applying expert knowledge of vehicle body operations
  • Integrating components to produce a final product
  • Evaluating designs for effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety
  • Investigating root causes of failures to maintain quality and recommending improvements
  • Understand and Implement the UI/UX for refuse vehicles

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

  • Responsible for control systems design, specification, programming, simulation, testing, and providing start-up assistance.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical engineering teams, with a strong understanding of mechanical kinematics.
  • Experienced in developing control system software and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) from concept to operational deployment using platforms such as IFM Efector, Allen Bradley, Modicon, GE Fanuc, Siemens, Automation Direct, Mitsubishi, Omron, Aromat, Toshiba, and mobile equipment controllers like Vasso and HED, QT, Java, C, C++
  • Proficient in CODESYS 2.3 & 3.5, IEC 61131-3, MATLAB Simulink, Model-Based Development, and diagnostic tools for CAN.
  • Knowledgeable in communication protocols such as CAN Bus, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, Industrial Ethernet, CAN Open, J1939, PROFIBUS, Device Net, and other RS485 networks.
  • Design control systems to enhance the performance of refuse collection vehicles.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable government safety and environmental standards related to motor vehicles and heavy-duty trucks.
  • Demonstrate excellent analytical and problem-solving skills in design, programming, and troubleshooting.
  • Capable of managing and executing multiple project responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of management, clients, and vendors.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and structural systems.
  • Act as a technical mentor and coach to less experienced engineers.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery
  • Travel required for this position up to 20%.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, equivalent technical degree, or equivalent experience.
  • 4 to 7 years related experience in controls and assembly operations.
  • Must have ground up development experience with PLC applications.
  • Design and development of Control System applications including generating PLC logic or other mobile controller platforms.
  • Wiring schematic design capabilities.
  • Good electrical and mechanical skills.
