Description

This RSO and EHS Specialist combines the responsibilities of a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) with those of an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist. This position is responsible for implementing and maintaining business wide Radiation Safety and EHS programs, principles, and procedures for the Mirion Technologies' Oak Ridge manufacturing facility. This role's primary objective is to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.

Essential Duties - Radiation Safety



  • Serve as Radiation Safety Officer and acts as the local Mirion qualified expert with the State of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Division of Radiological Health as well as the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division Radioactive Materials Program to ensure effective implementation of a and other specific licenses for manufacturing operations, including calibration and repair service, and research uses in accordance with regulations and approved license conditions.
  • Develop and implement radiation safety policies, procedures, and training programs to minimize occupational exposure and mitigate risks.
  • Conduct routine inspections and audits of radiation sources, facilities, and equipment to assess safety protocols and identify areas for improvement.
  • Maintain records of radiation monitoring data, incident reports, and regulatory documentation in accordance with established protocols.
  • Provide guidance and support to personnel working with radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment, including training on safe handling practices and emergency response procedures.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies, radiation safety committees, and internal stakeholders to address compliance issues and implement best practices.



Essential Duties - Environmental Health and Safety



  • Support the organization's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) program, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards, including ISO 45001.
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard evaluations to identify potential EHS hazards and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of EHS policies, procedures, and programs to promote a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Conduct EHS training sessions for employees to raise awareness and promote adherence to safety protocols.
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analyses to identify corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor EHS performance metrics and prepare reports for management review, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies, auditors, and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with EHS regulations and standards.



Responsibilities

Safety



  • Obey all safety rules and regulations for the Oak Ridge site.
  • Submit safety opportunities for improvement through the Tier 1 and 2 processes.
  • Promptly report safety near misses or incidents to EHS or management.


Quality



  • Ensure compliance with our ISO 9001:2015 quality management system.
  • Assist in internal auditing when requested.


Corporate/Site



  • Remain current in all required compliance training.
  • Obey all site regulations in accordance with the policies published in the Employee Handbook and by Human Resources.



            Additional Requirements



            • Demonstrated experience supporting the EHS requirements of an organization certified to ISO 45001.
            • Strong knowledge of radiation safety principles, regulations (e.g., NRC, OSHA), and industry best practices.
            • Familiarity with radiation monitoring equipment, instrumentation, and dosimetry techniques.
            • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
            • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
            • Professional certifications in radiation safety (e.g., CHP, CHMM) and/or EHS (e.g., CSP, CIH) preferred.
            • Ability to travel to the Atlanta site approximately quarterly.



            Education & Experience Requirements

            Education



            • Bachelor's degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or other relevant field of science desired but may be substituted with relevant experience in a Radiation Safety capacity.
            • Certification by a recognized specialist board such as the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) is a plus.


            Experience



            • Five (5) years of progressive work experience in radiation safety with at least two (2) years in regulatory designation of radiation safety officer in operations, research, or university environments.
            • Training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials or radioactive materials is preferred.
