Responsible for the evaluation of cytologic preparations for the presence or absence of normal/abnormal cells, presence of microorganisms, inflammatory reactions, endocrinopathies, benign and pre-malignant changes, neoplasia and cellular responses to therapeutic agents. In the absence of other staff, may monitor QA/QC activities of the laboratory.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)

  • Examine cell samples to detect abnormalities in the color, shape, or size of cellular components and patterns.
  • Prepare and analyze samples, such as Papanicolaou (PAP) smear body fluids and fine needle aspirations (FNAs), to detect abnormal conditions.
  • Maintain effective laboratory operations by adhering to standards of specimen collection, preparation, or laboratory safety.
  • Prepare cell samples by applying special staining techniques, such as chromosomal staining, to differentiate cells or cell components.
  • Assist pathologists or other physicians to collect cell samples by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy or other method.
  • Provide patient clinical data or microscopic findings to assist pathologists in the preparation of pathology reports.
  • Participates in intradepartmental rotations including, gyn and non/gyn screening, rapid interpretations and special stains, may include molecular testing, specimen preparation, FNA clinic and clerical assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications:

Education: Baccalaureate degree and certificate from an accredited school of cytotechnology.

Experience: 3-5 years of Cytotechnology experience

Certification: Must pass or be eligible for the ASCP Board of Registry examination.
