The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. The team develops and promotes safety strategies and policies for autonomous vehicles for its work with regulatory authorities, lawmakers, law enforcement and public and non-profit organizations. Our Safety Team also helps advise on compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.

In this role you will be hybrid based in Mountain View, California USA and report to our Head of System Safety.

You will:



  • Lead ISO 26262 development, assessment and certification activities within Waymo and with external partners
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure state-of-the-art practices and processes are followed
  • Lead tradeoff analyses for different architectural options in the area of compute, sensors, and actuators with respective stakeholders
  • Lead a team of functional safety engineers



You have:



  • Masters or higher in Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent
  • 15+ years of Functional Safety engineering including professional certification
  • Expertise in bringing successful ASIL D certified products to market
  • Expertise in technical project management skills with the ability to manage multiple parallel projects or teams
  • Leadership experience of in-house and partner teams



We prefer:



  • Expertise in performing hazard analyses (e.g., Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes, Effects, and Diagnostic Analysis, System-theoretic Process Analysis, etc.)
  • Expertise in embedded control system development, embedded software development, and/or verification and validation of such systems
  • Expertise in relevant quality and reliability standards as well as international regulatory requirements


Travel Requirements:

10% (peak)

Once per quarter, for team meetings, otherwise audits and partner engagements as necessary, to support ISO 26262 audits and assessment activities as needed

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.
