National Grid is hiring a Director, Electric Technical Training. This hybrid role can sit in either in either our Syracuse, NY, Buffalo, NY or Albany, NY office.

Job Purpose

This role involves providing strategic leadership and oversight to ensure the effective and efficient infrastructure for Technical Training and delivery resources. It is aimed at equipping the National Grid Upstate New York (UNY) Electric operations workforce with the necessary skills and competencies that align with both current and future organizational goals. The UNY Technical Training Director will also engage in strategic consultations with external sector and professional development forums to align qualifications, training standards, and regulatory policies with National Grid's skills development agenda. By continuously incorporating best practices this position will promote delivery excellence through a team of motivated and innovative specialists.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for technical training delivery activities, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and priorities.
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with operational business units, standards/work methods, safety, the People Function, and Corporate Affairs to develop a training delivery vision that aligns with the US business's Strategic Workforce Plan and broader business development initiatives.
  • Lead and manage a team of training professionals, including trainers, designers, and support staff, to ensure the efficient and effective execution of technical training interventions.
  • Oversee the implementation of technical training interventions, ensuring they meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Establish and uphold quality assurance processes and standards for training delivery, monitor performance metrics and implement improvements as necessary to achieve high-quality outcomes.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including business leaders, regulatory agencies, and industry partners, to support collaboration and ensure training initiatives align with business needs.
  • Manage training resources, including classroom and practical facilities, as well as requests from Overhead and Underground Lines, Substations, PTO, Electric Distribution Design, Transmission Lines, and our Electric and Gas engineers. This includes overseeing instructional materials to ensure adequate support for training delivery activities while adhering to budget constraints.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of training delivery processes, identifying opportunities for innovation and optimization.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of training delivery activities, analysing key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to assess effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and safety requirements governing training delivery operations, implementing measures to mitigate risks and maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Develop and manage the training delivery Opex and Capex budget, overseeing expenditures, forecasting, and financial reporting to support strategic decision-making and fiscal responsibility.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role with a proven track record in driving training delivery, including over 10 years of management, learning, and administration experience.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and emerging trends in technical training and development programs.
  • Proven ability to guide and develop technical skills at the national level in collaboration with joint utilities, professional institutions, and regulatory bodies.
  • Strong understanding of technical training principles, methodologies, and best practices, along with knowledge of industry-specific regulations and standards.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems, particularly Success Factors, and an understanding of industry best practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Experience in budget management and resource allocation.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Experience in managing a team of training professionals.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills
  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Education, or a related field - Preferred but not required.

Salary

$162,000 - $190,000 a year

National Grid utilizes an assessment that evaluates the job qualifications/characteristics using AI or statistically based scoring. For more information, please view NYC Local Law 144.
