Job Description

The School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is continuously seeking a qualified part-time candidate for an adjunct faculty teaching position for Yoga at various levels.

The incumbent will lead yoga classes for diverse skill levels, providing safe instruction and modifications for poses, creating lesson plans and sequences, and fostering a supportive environment. The position involves sharing knowledge of yoga principles, providing individualized feedback, and assisting with course administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities of Yoga Adjunct Instructor:

  • Lead Yoga Classes: Design and conduct yoga sessions for students of varying experience levels, incorporating postures (asanas), breathing techniques, and mindful practices.
  • Ensure Safety: Guide students through poses with proper alignment, providing modifications and manual adjustments to prevent injury and ensure safety.
  • Develop Class Content: Create engaging lesson plans and sequences that cater to student needs and abilities, demonstrating techniques clearly.
  • Create a Welcoming Environment: Foster a supportive and uplifting atmosphere for students to encourage their practice and growth.
  • Provide Guidance: Offer personalized feedback, answering questions, and sharing knowledge of yoga philosophy to help students deepen their practice.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated on the latest yoga trends and techniques through ongoing education and training to enhance teaching skills.

Responsibilities of UMKC Part-time Faculty Members:

  • Create and maintain civil and engaging learning environments
  • Deliver curriculum through high quality course instruction
  • Assess student learning of course objectives
    • Use a variety of evaluation methods
    • Use the early alert system to identify students at risk of failing, when applicable (UMKC Connect)
    • Provide students with prompt, objective, fair feedback on their work
    • Assign grades and maintain student records in accordance with university policy
    • Adhere to and model university standards of professionalism
  • Be accessible to students for conferences / consultations
  • Engage in critical self-reflection and professional development
  • Hours vary according to opportunity. Contracts are generally issued on a semester-by-semester basis.
Qualifications

  • Yoga Certification-completion of a recognized yoga instructor training program.
  • Anatomy & Physiology Knowledge-A strong understanding of body mechanics, alignment, and anatomy to provide safe instruction.
  • Communication Skills-ability to clearly explain poses, provide motivation, and connect with students on a personal level.
  • Adaptability-skills in adapting class plans and offering modifications to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Reliability-Punctuality, commitment to fulfilling teaching schedules.
  • Patience and Empathy-The ability to support and guide students patiently through their yoga journey.
Anticipated Hiring Range

If course has less than 10 students, the contract will be adjusted to reflect a per student compensation.

Appointment

These are term, non-tenure-accruing positions. Appointment periods are for the semester with consideration for reappointment.
