Job Summary

The Cloud Engineer is responsible for configuring and operating UCSF cloud infrastructure services. The Cloud Engineer coordinates collaboration with developers, engineers, business partners, and key University stakeholders to provide high-quality cloud services. This role configures and supports workloads in the cloud, automates cloud infrastructure maintenance, and builds new operational monitoring capabilities.
The Cloud Engineer serves as the technical administrator for hardware, operating systems, network management, and web systems, planning and coordinating the installation, configuration, and testing of components across central or departmental systems. Applying advanced systems infrastructure concepts, the Cloud Engineer resolves highly complex issues, selects appropriate methods and evaluation criteria, presents to technical teams, evaluates new technologies with cost/benefit analyses, and may lead a team of systems or infrastructure professionals.
The Cloud Engineer will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's cloud services are operable, secure, and effective in support of the University's mission. This team member will advance UCSF's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across stakeholders. This role will execute the University's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

our placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $138,000 - $207,000 (Annual Rate).

The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including system and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services. Additionally, it manages databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not just for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one of the following fields: Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, etc.
  • 3 years of experience in one or more of the following fields: IT infrastructure, cloud computing, network administration and security, DevOps, web systems administration, etc.
  • Experience assisting with the migration of server workloads to cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Familiarity with virtualization technologies.
  • Experience with source control, basic testing, and continuous integration techniques for cloud applications or infrastructure.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices and deployment processes. Experience supporting the build, test, and release of applications in the delivery pipeline.
  • Knowledge of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and integration with cloud data providers. Experience working with Linux, Windows, and containerization or orchestration platforms (such as Kubernetes).
  • Experience with cloud-based automation tools and processes. Experience assisting in the provisioning and maintenance of cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Skill in adapting equipment and technology to meet user needs. Understanding of how system management actions may impact other systems, users, and related functions.
  • Knowledge and experience in systems problem identification and resolution. Experience with configuration, operation, and basic tuning of technology systems.
  • Familiarity with key Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies and principles. Exposure to IaC tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or similar, and basic proficiency in scripting languages. Ability to write and maintain clear, concise infrastructure code with guidance. Experience assisting in automating deployment, scaling, and management of infrastructure components.
  • Demonstrated experience in information technology, platform services, and cloud services.
  • Thorough knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to support business needs.
  • Familiarity with software development using object-oriented languages or infrastructure-as-code tools (such as Terraform), and an understanding of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to triage issues, escalating to leadership or management as needed. Ability to interpret and apply service-level agreements, policies, and procedures to day-to-day work.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information and ideas to a diverse group of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships and rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance priorities and support multiple projects. Experience working in a project-based environment, with exposure to project management practices such as schedule management, status reporting, and risk communication. Awareness of budget planning, business case development, and service management concepts.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to scope solutions based on available resources and timelines. Willingness to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.
  • Ability to participate in activities that foster an inclusive environment valuing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Ability to think creatively and suggest new ideas, including the adoption of new technologies or processes. Ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in one of the following fields: Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, etc.
  • Experience in complex higher education and/or healthcare environments
  • Certification:
    • Solutions Architect 1 (Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or equivalent cloud provider)
    • Solutions Architect 2 (AWS, Microsoft, GCP or equivalent cloud provider)
